Pagsamo means the act of pleading. When I read this, I immediately thought of
that old saying, “Better to ask forgiveness than to beg permission.” Even though I never once heard my father
utter those words, it was apparent that he held that belief. He would often do things that could possibly
get him into trouble and then act as if he had no idea what went wrong,
I recall once we were visiting Arlington National
Cemetery and we approached a flag pole that was behind a chain that was very
clearly meant to keep people away from the flagpole. At the base of the flagpole was a plaque that
my father wanted to read.
Clearly my father was not meant to cross that chain,
but he wanted to know what the plaque said, so he crossed it anyway.
Seconds later, two MPs roared up in a jeep and
skidded to a halt. They approached my
father, who was at the base of the flagpole reading the plaque. My father calmly looked up at the MPs and
asked, "Y’all havin’ a funeral?"
The MPs stood at attention and said together, “Yes,
sir.” They lowered the flag to half-mast
and went back to their jeep.
Me and the rest of the family were scared to death,
but my father did not bat an eye.

ReplyDeleteHe was only afraid of dead people. Nothing else could scare him. However, if someone died and he had to go to a funeral, he was afraid. My posts called My First Trailer and Carl The Friendly Ghost talk about that.
