Word High July reflections.

Reflections of a Month Gone By

Whew! Has it really been a month of our Word-High July Filipino word challenge?  Where

has the time gone?  Well, supposedly we would learn a new word each day.  I say 'supposedly' because my memory is very short and I have a hard time remembering the words I know in American. 

Some people call the language we speak English.  However, if you scratch it on the surface, we see that here in the United States of America, like many other places, we have adopted words from other languages and made them part of our own.

One difference that comes to mind is when a friend of ours from Bangladesh asked me to look in the dryer and get the torch and go back and check the beer cooler. 

I had no idea what he was saying.  First of all, the store had been a restaurant, so it had a stove, but I could not think what he could be calling a dryer.  I hadn’t even begun to think about what a torch was.

Turns out he wanted me to look in the “drawer’ for a “flashlight”.  As I understand it, we have several terms that were adopted from Mexico that may or may not have passed through Spain to get there.  Things like “lasso” and “rodeo”.

Well, I can’t say I retained many of these words, but I was at least exposed to them and, along the way, we met some of our fellow bloggers.

I am not the brightest bulb on the tree when it comes to poetry. Many of our fellow bloggers are heavily into it.  That being said, it is good to expose oneself to things one normally would not take a second look at.

Like with two other memes we participate in.  Very rarely will I read fiction.  However, some of the books mentioned in these posts sound like great books.  I will probably never get around to reading them because there are already 52,389 books ahead of them on the Kindle and I think there are about ten print books here waiting to be read.

Also, from time-to-time an author or publicist will send along a book related to a business concept and ask me to read and review it. 

In most of these memes, the bloggers become like a part of the family.  This word challenge was no different.

Word High July for 29 July 2016 Word gigil

Today’s word is gigil. It means the uncontrollable urge to pinch or squeeze someone.  Did you notice how close it comes to the word giggle?

In today’s politically correct world, I cannot imagine such a thing being tolerated.  I often have an uncontrollable urge to squeeze my child-bride Suzanne.  If someone were to pinch or squeeze anyone who was not their significant other, I could see lawsuits and arrests as the outcome.

Years ago, my family had a Western Auto Associate Store in Iva, South Carolina. One of our mechanics came into the sales area and went to the office and leaned on the counter while he was discussing business with my father.

My brother had one of those large pairs of Channel Lock Pliers. You know, the ones with the handles as long as your arms.  He opened the jaws wide as he snuck up on the mechanic and pinched him hard on the rear end.  My brother said he just had to do that.

Word High July for 28 July 2016 Word halakhak

Today’s word is halakhak, which means a loud, uninhibited laughter.  What a big word for a big laugh.    It puts me in mind of the old story-tellers like Jerry Clower, Jim Davis, or my own father, Robert Bruce McClendon, Jr.

These guys would tell stories and, even though they had told them hundreds of times to hundreds of different people, they still managed to laugh during the telling. 

Often, it was like they amused themselves all over again in the retelling. Sometimes, the story-teller is the reason the story is funny or interesting, or both.

Today’s word is yugto, which is a fundamental transition or development of a story or phenomenon.

For my family, in a very real sense, yesterday’s word that meant last farewell and today’s word work together.   On 12 May 1987, my father died.  When he did, it changed our lives within seconds.

We lost absolutely everything we owned at the time.  All my child-bride Suzanne and I had was each other and our oldest son, Jared.  Things changed in the blink of an eye,

Word High July for 26 July 2016 Word pahimakas

Today’s word is pahimakas.  It means last farewell.  Wow, there is a word loaded with sadness.  It calls to mind the many loved ones, furry and human, who have gone on before us. 

There is a My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Episode called Filly Vanilli, where the pony Fluttershy gets a leaf that makes her sing in a very deep voice.  She enjoys the experience of getting to sing until the pony she was replacing, Big Mack, is well enough to sing again.  She then says, “I did not know the last time would be the last time.”  It is sad when we say goodbye to someone and do not realize that the last time would be the last time.

Say a very fond farewell to everyone.  You never know when the last time will be the last time.

reader of non-fiction, I would have to say I seek knowledge wherever I can get it.  Wisdom is one of those things that you can get from reading.  One could read Proverbs in the Holy Bible and get some wisdom.  However, wisdom is one of those things one gets primarily through experience.

It is good that sometimes we can gain wisdom from other people’s experience if we just listen to what they try to tell us over the years.  There is a great deal one can learn by reading Ben Franklin’s autobiography.  He tells his readers of the mistakes he made in his life.  

We can learn a lot from those who have gone before us.

Word High July for 24 July 2016 Word dalisay

Today’s word is dalisay, which means pure or undiluted.   There are so few things in life today that qualify for that.  I know the love I feel from my beautiful child-bride Suzanne would qualify as pure and undiluted.

However, when I think of pure and undiluted things, I remember my nineteenth birthday back years ago.  I had a friend fill in for me at Rescue 16 at the Southern Shops “Metro” so I could have my birthday off.

Two friends, both male, arrived to help me celebrate my birthday.  They played bartender and mixed me a drink. The drink was their version of a screwdriver, which was about one part orange juice, one part cherry juice, and ten

parts vodka.  The second one left out the orange juice and the cherry juice. Yep, it was pure, undiluted, 180 proof vodka.  

After a tall glass of that, I was very wobbly.  I threw up things I had forgotten I had eaten.  Then, after about an hour of dry heaves, I threw up what looked like body parts a young man might need in later life.

For three days, I convalesced.  All I could eat and keep down was Cream of Wheat.  To this day I cannot look at or smell vodka without getting sick to my stomach.

Word High July for 23 July 2016 Word likha

Today’s word is likha, which means to create something through intelligence and skill.  I am about the most egotistical person on the planet.  I often say, “I am good at what I do."  I often feel like what I create is through intelligence and skill.

I pat my own back.  However, often I feel like I am in over my head.  Like the time we remodeled our kitchen.  From the very beginning, I felt overwhelmed.  However, my beautiful child-bride Suzanne assured me each step of the way that I could do it.

We watched a lot of HGTV and DIY and felt better. The only problem is that there were times when Tim Taylor wanted to show up in my mind and reassure me that the word fiasco was invented just for me.

Recently, our headlight went out in our car.  In the old days, this was easy enough to fix.  Today, it can be overwhelming.  Fixing the headlight, coupled with the heat index in the 100s made for a very intimidating situation.

My beautiful child-bride Suzanne found several YouTube videos that helped.   We got it done.  Now, we feel much more intelligent than we did before, at least I do.

Suzanne and her Daddy

Today’s word is makisig, which means dashing, well-dressed, gorgeous.  This word brings to mind the people like Clark Gable from the old classic movie.  The gorgeous part brings to mind my beautiful child-bride Suzanne.  She would look well-dressed or gorgeous in a flour sack.

Here in Gulf Coast Texas, it is so blasted hot that most people go for cool clothing rather than worry about being well-dressed.  Even on Sunday mornings at church you are highly likely to see church goers in shorts and a T-shirt rather than a suit and tie, including many preachers.
