Here are the fill-in-the-blanks:

Yesterday was Thanksgiving.

I know that is a blinding flash of the obvious.  However, Thanksgiving is more than just turkey and dressing.  It is about time with family and friends.

It is about giving thanks for all we have.  Even those of us who have little still have more than many others.
It all belongs to God.  He gives it to us and only expects 10% of it back.

I don’t normally regift anything

I have received gifts that I can’t use and so I will pass it along to someone who can use it.  When we were working at the convenience stores, several people would give us fish they had just caught.  Since I don’t know how to clean fish, I would give them to someone who did.
One of these days, I will tell you all about the peanut butter cake and why we don’t eat food items that customers give us.

Frankly, I don’t normally give gifts.  If I like you, you know it.  If I don’t, you know that, too. Why do I need to spend money to buy you something you don’t want, just to tell you I like you?

My favorite holiday leftover is everything.

I love to make a turkey sandwich with the leftovers.  I love the green bean casserole.  There is no such thing as leftover rolls.  And, if you expect there to be left over deviled eggs, you are going to be disappointed, if they are made correctly.

The best part of a long, holiday weekend is family.

Macy’s has ruined the parade.  It used to be great seeing the bands perform and the floats.  Now, we have to have a large Victoria’s not so Secret ad staring at us throughout the parade while the anchors talk about all the D list actors who are badly performing songs from their musical.  These actors lip sync poorly.

The football games are taken over by players with a political ax to grind.  Celebrities, you are paid to entertain. Who cares what you think about the government?

Big retail is trying to kill the goose that lays the golden egg by opening on Thanksgiving.  They were not satisfied with Black Friday.  Now, they have taken over Thanksgiving.  I will not purchase anything on Thanksgiving, not even a stick of gum, if I can help it.

If you buy anything on Thanksgiving, you are telling big retail it is okay that they make their employees miss their Thanksgiving.  You are telling big retail that family does not matter.

I hope you all had a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving.  I think I will roll myself over to a plate now and eat some leftovers.

  1. Thank you for participating ion the fill-ins, nice answers. Leftovers are great, I am glad we have a lot even though I made my Mom take a bunch home too. I love to buy gifts for people to show I care, must be a woman thing. Have a nice weekend.

    1. I noticed long ago that most gifts sit and gather dust after the gift giving is over with. Unless the gift is very useful, there is a high likelihood that the gift will go unused. How many bottles of perfume can a woman use? We have walked past a few people who smelled like they swam in the perfume. It still is not highly likely that any woman will ever use all the perfume she has been given.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Thanks for hosting the Fill-Ins. They are a big part of our week.

  2. I think the best gifts are practical and useful things. Things that are actually used not just put in a drawer or closet and forgotten. Leftovers rule!

    1. This is true. A retired grandpa can only use so many ties. A woman only needs one bottle of any particular brand of perfume. I remember when I was a teenager, people would give me bottle after bottle of cologne. Finally, I began to wonder if I really smelled that bad. In my senior year of high school, I was given about ten English Leather gift sets. I must have really been one stinky teenager.

  3. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and lots of great things to eat. I am not sure about the peanut butter cake, but I hope the people meant well!

    1. They meant very well. My father meant well, too. It just did not work out too well. I will tell the story on video soon.

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. We had a good Thanksgiving. It would have been better if there was a huge platter piled high with pork chops served to a hungry Marine.

  5. David, Although the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade isn't the same as yesteryear I still enjoy watching it a little bit. They have a zillion more commercials now than they once did in addition to the things you hit on. The overpaid athletes who disrespect the American flag and the men & women serving to keep us free should be asked by the owners of the team to leave their political opinions off the field. Heck, if you are just a regular employee your employer might fire you for talking politics on the job, so why should it be any different for athletes? It shouldn't! Great fill-ins! Thanks for sharing them!

    1. Cathy,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. You are right. I am sure the parade still has some entertainment value. I would love to see them spotlight the bands. Maybe a few months in advance they should go to the schools and record them performing as a concert band and as a marching band on their own field.
