Wednesday Hodgepodge - 24 August 2016

Wednesday Hodgepodge - 24 August 2016

1    1.     It's National Waffle Day (August 24th)...what decision are you currently 'waffling over'? (or share one you've recently 'waffled over')

This one is hard to say.  We don’t have to do much around here.  Everything is pretty much same-o same-o.  We don’t have any money to have to make a financial decision over.  We don’t have anywhere to go.  So, really, nothing.

2    2.     It's the middle of August, but I'm already seeing lots of autumn-related posts. Do you think we rush the seasons? If so, does that bother you? I saw (here) an end of summer bucket list that included- make s'mores, read a new (or favorite) book in the park, eat something delicious and bad for you at a state fair, be a tourist for the day, have a pot luck picnic, book a last minute summer getaway, relax by or in the pool, take a hike to watch the sunset, have a day on the lake, try a new summer recipe

Well, as far as seasons of the year go, we don’t have any here.  It gets extra hot in the summer time, but there is no fall or winter here most of the time.  The trees lose their leaves when the spring leaves push out the old ones.  There are no fall colors and no bare trees usually.  Back when we were younger, it was fun to take a camping trip in the cool weather and have a campfire.

The stores rush the seasons.  The day before Christmas Eve, our Walmart had taken down most of the Christmas displays and started putting up Valentine’s Day things.

The workers in some stores were saying “Merry Christmas" just before Halloween.  There was little or no special merchandise for Saint Patrick’s Day.

Which activities on the list might you squeeze in before summer officially comes to a close?

Our kids are in college or the service.  There really is nothing to do regarding seasons or back to school.  If we lived back in the Carolinas, we would be looking forward to apple season and the changing of the leaves.

3    3.     Your favorite summertime 'art' found in nature?

I don’t have an artistic bone in my body.  Some day ask me about the Howe House in Columbia, South Carolina, or Mr. Shirley in Iva, South Carolina, and I will give you some proof of that.

But, if I were to find art in nature, I would have to say a homegrown tomato is a true work of art.  Almost all fresh grown fruits and vegetables are works of art.  I will not get into the discussion of whether a tomato is a vegetable or a fruit.  Suffice it to say, I am a self-professed redneck.

4.
Stephen R. Covey is quoted as saying 'We judge ourselves by our intentions, and others by their actions.' Agree or no? Do you define yourself based on your intentions, your actions, or something else?

I think it is human nature to judge ourselves by one standard and others by another.  We find different actions to be acceptable based upon our relationship to someone else.  Sometimes we judge family members a little stricter than we do complete strangers.

It would be hard to say what measure I use to judge myself.  I really do not know.  I know there are times that I make short-term decisions that I know are bad in the long-term, but I feel I have no choice.

We cannot really know someone else’s intentions; therefore, the only measure we can use is their actions.

5. Are you useful in a crisis? Elaborate.

I think most of the time I am decent in a crisis.  I used to work with the Iva Rescue Squad, the American Red Cross, and Spartanburg County, South Carolina EMS.  I felt I had it under control then.  I think I still have a clear head in a crisis.  Sometimes during my own diabetic emergencies, I panic and then I tell myself to leave it in my child-bride Suzanne’s hands and just let her take care of me.  That always works.

6. What's been your go-to dish this summer? Is it something you'll continue making as the seasons change?

Wow! It has been so hot here this summer that we had to go with sandwiches and salads. We used paper plates whenever possible to keep from having to do too much in this oppressive heat.  It has gotten up to the 120s on some days.  Right now, there is a break in the heat.

7. Adult coloring books are a thing now. Have you jumped on the bandwagon? If not is this something you think you might enjoy?

I don’t think I would enjoy this.  Coloring as a kid was seldom enjoyable because I had an older sister who always criticized everything I did and hogged all the crayons.  We called them “colors”. So, I really don’t think this is something I would try.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

It is still too hot.  We keep getting word that our military is highly in need of our prayers, more so than usual.  We have two sons in the military and we are out of contact with both of them for now.  OP SEC(Operatonal Security) is in high gear right now.  We are not allowed to know where they are or when they will be back.  If all goes well, our Marine will be stateside next year.  He already knows his assignment, but his daddy is still praying he will be reassigned to the Marine detachment at the Navy base in Corpus Christi.  That is the closest he can be to us and very close to his baby sister.

Have a great week and we will see you on the flip.

  1. Well I'm a huge fan of a home grown tomato too. We are in an apt while we build so no tomatoes here, but my daughter's inlaws have an enormous garden and have been sharing the bounty with me all summer long. I just made a big pot of spaghetti sauce to put in the freezer with some of the fresh tomatoes they gave me-yum! Stay cool. The military and our nation continue to be in my prayers.

    1. Out here tomatoes aren't such a big thing. The very few farmers' stands don't have them. All we see at the roadside stands are watermelons and pecans. Suzanne set out some plants on 1 April and they have grown, but no blossoms yet.

It was nice of your daughter's in-laws to give you the produce. Thanks for the prayers.

  2. I always enjoy reading your answers. I didn't realize that both of your sons are in the military, that must be extra stressful for you and your wife. I am glad it has cooled off some for you. I am thankful that is Mass. we get to enjoy the change of the season.

    1. Thank you. Yes, we are a two Blue Star family. When we hear the words Op Sec (Operational Security), we tense up. It is down in the low 100s today so that is cooler for us. We hope it will get cooler.

Enjoy the fall leaves and have a cold weather apple or two. We miss them both. Apples in Texas are not the same as apples from the mountains in the East.
