Here are the fill-in-the-blanks:
1. One Thanksgiving tradition I have is we watch Miracle on 34th Street and It's a Wonderful Life.

We used to love to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  However, the
parade has changed drastically.  When the TV isn’t showing the talking heads from the network, they are showing us a clear shot of a Victoria’s Secret billboard which tells us that Victoria does not keep secrets.

I would love to see the bands.  Instead, the talking heads spend most of the time a band is going by talking about other things and we maybe see a split second of the band.  However, we do get to see all of a Z-list celebrity sing badly.  We don’t watch it anymore.

2. Black Friday is a pain in the …neck.
Retailers keep pushing the envelope.  They start the Christmas season way too early.  They have killed the goose who lays the golden eggs.

Christmas, although it is not about retail profits, is the most profitable time of year for retailers.  This year we plan not to spend a cent on exchanging Christmas presents.  All our kids are adults now and we have no grand young'uns.

3. The best part about Thanksgiving Day is the food.
Suzanne is an excellent cook.  She is even better than Granny For Short.  She cooks a great turkey with all the fixin’s.

4. One Thanksgiving, _ended with me in the back of an Anderson City Police car.

It is a long story, even for me.  We kept the Western Auto store open that Thanksgiving because we knew that we had two choices, close and stay out of town all day or be open.

Customers would finish their turkey and decide they just had to change their oil or they needed a set of sparkplug wires for their car.

They thought nothing of coming to our house to get my father to spend his Thanksgiving opening up the store for them to get something they should have bought the day before.

We ate our meal at my Granny for Short’s house and I walked up to McClendon Manor.  My friend and I decided to go to the movie.  We went to
see Animal House.

A little while before the movie ended, my friend decided he could not sit still any longer so he went outside.

All my friends had keys to my car. I was an EMT and often we would wander upon an incident. They would need to drive my car while I was in the back of an ambulance.

Since I would be the first responding EMT, by law I could not leave the patient until relieved by a doctor or paramedic.  There was only one paramedic in the county at that time.

When I went outside, I saw my friend sitting on a pole drinking orange juice.  He said, “Where’s your car, dude?”

I figured he had moved my car and hidden it.  I told him to 'fess up.  He kept on and said, "You better call the police."  I thought he was still funnin’ me until he flagged down the Anderson City Police.

It was kind of cold so, the police put us in his backseat while he took the report.  Two friends of ours, and fellow band members, were there and drove us home.

When I got home, my father informed me that he was NOT going to buy me another car.  Not then, not ever. This meant that my mother would have to drive me and my brother to school.

We took delivery of my new car on December 1st of that year.

Well, folks, that’s it for this week.   We hope you will all have a very safe and happy Thanksgiving.  We will get our youngest daughter off the island Monday, after they cut off my cast.  She will go back Saturday.

  1. Your grandma, like most grandmas and grannies, was a far better cook than I could ever hope to be.

  2. Grandpa often had to work Thanksgiving, but he was a doctor who delivered babies, and they won't wait. Customers of a Western Auto could have waited!

    1. I agree, a baby doctor cannot put off deliveries. Only on a very rare occasion (fixing a hearse just before a funeral) would a Western Auto ever be able to aid in an actual urgency.

  3. That's quite a story, Christmas sales are really getting too early, and I never liked to go any where on that weekend. Except maybe a movie.

    1. Looking back, it was funny. At the time it was not so funny,

  4. Thank you for your great answers in the fill-ins. That is a funny story about Thanksgiving- I am glad you were not in the police car arrested. I am sorry about your car though. I know what you mean about the parade, I don't watch it either. Those are good movies to watch. I stopped watching It's a Wonderful Life though years ago because it makes me cry too much. I highly recommend Nic Cage's Family Man. That is almost like a modern day wonderful life. Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. We have never seen the movie you mentioned. It would be good if the parade would get back to what it used to be. Have a great weekend and a Happy Thanksgiving.

  7. You tell good stories, David! I need to share more of mine. I inherited a bit of storytelling flair from my Dad. I have gotten away from it, but I am inspired to get back to it. Life gets in the way too often. Happy Thanksgiving! Annie at ~McGuffy's Reader~

    1. Thank you, Annie. Everyone should get out a pen and paper, a word processor, a recorder, or a video camera and record their stories. When we are gone, they go with us unless we have done something to keep them going.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a great Thanksgiving.
