Share Your World – 2016 Week 51 – Favorite Holiday Edition

What is your favorite holiday?

It used to be Christmas.  I have always loved the smell of the tree, family gathering together, and things like that.  Then, we opened the Western Auto Store.  You see a dark side of humanity when you work in retail.  Normally polite people become savages when there is a product that has become scarce.

I have always liked Thanksgiving.  This is a better holiday.  Few people out there are fighting over turkeys.
What types of food is associated with your holiday?

For both of them, turkey, dressing, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce
(the real kind that still looks like the can). Cakes, pies, cookies, puddings, meat, yum.

Do you travel for your holiday?
Yes and no.   We have to go to the Island and get our youngest daughter.  This involves about eight hours of round-trip driving.  Otherwise, no, we would not drive for this.

Is it a religious or spiritual holiday?

For us, both Thanksgiving and Christmas are religious holidays.  Thanksgiving is meant to give thanks for all we have.  Our family thanks God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit for this.  Others may thank other gods, or nature, or whatever.  Christmas, no matter what non-Christians try to make of it, is the celebration of the Birth of Jesus.   They can say holiday tree, season’s greetings, and happy holidays all they like, it is still Christmas, by George.

Is there a gift exchange?
Not any more.  When the kids were young, we bought Christmas presents.  Now, we might give a token present to them and they might give us something, but there is no money in our family for gifts.

How long does the celebration last?

For us, Thanksgiving starts the minute we have both of our girls with us and lasts until the first of the two of them has to be back at school.  Christmas is the same way.  Usually we start Christmas on our oldest daughter’s birthday since it is so close to Christmas.  We end it after the first of the year.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

We are grateful that we can give thanks to God for all He has given us.  We are thankful for all that He does for us.  We are thankful that He sent His Son for us.

Last Monday, I told you all about Suzanne’s need for eye surgery.  We are looking into a few programs that you have suggested.  One program will require travel in order to receive the surgery.  We have a GoFundMe account set up that is going strong, but we need your help to promote it.

So far, the Marines have been very big givers, followed closely by a small group of college students who have to sell their blood just to eat.  We also have had a donation from a preacher at a small country church who has to work an additional job, just to pay his bills.

Little is much when God is in it.  Somehow, these people with very little income have stepped up to give great sums.  Please, if you can give, do so.  If you can’t give, please promote this fund on your blogs, YouTube, and other social media outlets.  God bless you.  Have a great week and a Merry Christmas.
