Wednesday Hodgepodge 18 January 2017

1. ASAP typically stands for 'as soon as possible'. What else could it stand for in your life right now?

Acutely Stupid Aggravating People.  In our lives, we deal with people who
operate on a higher level of stupid.  From people who talk on a cell phone while smoking and pumping gas to people who are in government positions who do not understand basic business terminology.

Once we were at a busy gas station.  Parked right beside us was a man on his cell phone.  Cell phones create invisible but deadly sparks.  He was also smoking and not paying attention to the fuel going into his vehicle.  This is deadly.  It could blow up the entire station in seconds.

I was helping a local businessman trying to straighten out a problem he had with a government agency.  He speaks little English.  I spoke with one woman and told him that he did file on time.  The bank canceled his check on such and such a day and so forth.  She did not understand that the bank canceling his check meant that the check had been cashed and cleared the bank.  I tried to explain that this was proof he had filed on time.  She did not get it. She said, “I don’t know why they would cancel his check.”

2. Are you the last person to speak up in a group or the first to have an idea? Why do you suppose that is? Is it a good thing or no?

It depends on the group.  I am an out-front kind of person.  However, when faced with a new group of people, I may just slip in quietly and listen to them talk.  I don’t mind speaking up.  I don’t care if others think I am stupid when I speak.  If someone asks for input, they are going to get it from me.

3. What do you remember best about being 12?

When I was 12, we moved from Inman, South Carolina, to Iva, South Carolina. My family started a new business and I started middle school.  Starr-Iva Middle School was hell.  It was out in the middle of nowhere.  The facilities were run down and drab.  Many of the teachers did not want to be there.  This is a time when everyone is trying to find out who they are and where they fit in.

Everyone is going through puberty around at that time and everyone is trying to figure out what is going on inside them.  Everyone has a screwed up understanding of the changes taking place.

4. January 18th is National Winnie the Pooh Day. Which character do you relate to the most, and why? If you're stumped go here for inspiration.

I think there is no doubt that I most relate to Tigger.  He is very upbeat and optimistic.  Most of the time I am, too.  He has a lot of fun just being himself.  Even when he is completely wrong, he sees a good outcome.

5. What's an app you use that helps simplify or make life easier for you in some way?

I don’t have a smart phone, so I don’t have any apps per se.  However, if we were to include programs like Google Calendar, then I would say that Google Calendar helps me keep up with things.

I use Google Sheets to keep up with our finances.  I used to use Quicken for this but when the old computer crashed, I could not afford to upgrade to the new Quicken so we use Google Sheets.

On the computer, I use PowerPoint to make videos and Excel to crunch numbers.  Excel works better than Google Sheets, but with Google Sheets I can access it from almost any computer.

6. San Francisco (CA), San Diego (CA), San Juan (PR) San Antonio (TX) Sanibel (FL)...you have an all expenses paid long weekend to one of these destinations. Which one do you choose and why?

How about none of the above?  I don’t want to have to deal with people out in the real world. If I have to choose, I would choose San Antonio, TX.  The Riverwalk can be a very fun place.  Ride the boats, listen to the music, eat in the Riverfront cafes, and take in the shows.  Suzanne and I have done this and it was fun.  The Alamo is within walking distance, so we can enjoy the history.  Just don’t wander around far from that area.  You take your life in your own hands if you do.

7. Share with us a song that makes you feel nostalgic? For what?

Endless Love, Sexy Eyes, For Your Eyes Only, 9 to 5, and countless others were popular when Suzanne and I first started dating.  Shortly after that, there was Certain Girl and Open Arms.  Swingin’ was also popular as was Elvira.  These remind me of when Suzanne and I were first together and we had no real responsibilities.  All we had to do was go to school, study, and get to know each other

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

We just went through a very hard winter here in Gulf Coast Texas.  Those three days were terrible.  We had temperatures that dropped into the 20s.  It even snowed one day for about two hours.  It melted before it hit the ground, but snow is snow.

People got out their cold weather clothes.  They bundled up in their heavy parkas, snow boots, gloves, hats, ski masks, tank tops, and shorts.  This is cold weather gear in Gulf Coast Texas.

We still have a long way to go with the GoFundMe for Suzanne’s eye surgery. If you can contribute, please do. If you can promote this on your blogs and other social media, please do.  We thank you for your support.

Our books will be free in memory of Papa Bruce’s birthday 24 January and again in celebration of Suzanne’s brother’s birthday 27 January. Please get your free copy then. Follow the links in the side bar to find them.

If you would like for me to pray for you, please drop me an e-mail by clicking prayer.

  1. Tigger would be about right for you, pretty often, anyway. Of course, bouncing like that has kind of been put on hold for now. :)

  2. Like you ASAP. I went to the Riverwalk a few years ago and thought it was a great place to visit. Good song choices.

    1. Thanks for stopping by. We went there a while back. It was fun, but we are not likely to go there for a while, too many people.

  4. Snow in Houston, WOW! I spent a summer in Houston while working on a new Home Depot Expo store and thought I would melt. I did enjoy working in San Antonio, it was cooler (fall) and I loved seeing the historic sites. Have a good week.
    Cheers!

    1. Yes, we are about 60 miles southwest of Houston. It snowed, but it melted before it hit the ground. Have a great week, as well.
