Here are the fill-ins:

1. The most interesting museum I have been to is McKissick on the campus of the University of South Carolina.

On the main campus of the University of South Carolina, there are several museums.  One is the museum that houses all the archives of the old MovieTone newsreels.  This is outstanding.

However, a small museum known as the McKissick museum houses the walking stick that Preston Brooks used to beat Charles Sumner on the floor of the U. S. Senate.

Brooks was a congressman from South Carolina.  Charles Sumner was a Senator.  Sumner had made a speech entitled Bleeding Kansas in which he mocked Preston Brooks’ cousin, who was a senator from South Carolina.

Brooks walked onto the senate floor and caught Sumner by surprise.  He took his walking stick and beat Sumner almost to death and walked out.

Impeachment proceedings were started against Brooks.  Brooks resigned instead and went back to South Carolina.  A special election was held to fill Brooks’ vacated seat.  Even though Brooks was not running, he won by a landslide.  In the meantime, hundreds of walking sticks were sent to Brooks to replace the one he broke while beating Sumner.

2. The most interesting historical place I have been to is really too many to name..

We have been to the Alamo. We have been to the Hermitage, which is the home of Andrew Jackson.  We have been to the battery in Charleston and to Walnut Grove Plantation,.   We have been to the site of the Long Cane Indian Massacre (Suzanne’s 8th great-grandmother was killed here).  These were all wonderfully historic.

3.Blue Bell Ice Cream_  is back!

It had been recalled for a while.  It was terrible going without it.  We lived in South Carolina where there really is not a stand out ice cream.  One is pretty much the same as another  But Blue Bell Ice Cream is a cut above all the rest.  You can have your Ben and Jerry’s and Haagen-Dazs or whatever else.  Blue Bell is far better than any of that, and it is cheaper, too.

4. I was surprised when shy little Suz gave permission for about 30 student nurses to watch her give birth to our firstborn son.

Suzanne is very shy and introverted.  When the teaching doctor came into the birthing room to ask if they could watch Suzanne give birth to our oldest son Jared, I was geared up to say, NO.  However, shy little Suz  said, “Sure, I think it would be simply charming.”  She did not really say that, but she did let them come and watch.

Jared’s due date was 05 June 1986.  It was 05 June 1986 and these student nurses had to be in class by 11:30 am.  Jared was born at exactly 11:29 AM.  I joke and say that he was going to hold out and be born at exactly noon but he wanted everyone to see him.  He always was a show off.  Just like his father.

Well, folks, that is it for this week.   Any of you who follow this blog regularly might have noticed that I have stopped participating in all the memes except for this one.  We have just been so overwhelmed with things here that are demanding our attention.

We have a couple of friends that need us to help them in a few months. We are trying to get everything done that we can before then so that we won’t fall too far behind if we do end up needing to help them.  It is kind of up in the air.

Have a great week!

  1. We have been to some pretty cool places. Now, we need to see what else Texas has to offer out there and eventually somehow find our way to the Jefferson Memorial. I love you, my Zing.

  2. Great answers, that is too funny that your son was born a minute before students were to be there. You have been to a lot of historical places. I am confused about the senate story. Why would someone be so praised for almost beating someone to death?

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. The reason Preston Brooks was praised and even honored has to do with a matter of honor. You must remember that this was from back in the day when duels were fought over things we would consider insignificant today. Southern honor was very important. Sumner had mocked Brook's cousin about a speech impediment. Brooks was known to duel and was quick to do so. Instead, he beat the man up. The whole idea was to stand up for his cousin. Why the cousin did not challenge Sumner to a duel, I have no idea.

  3. Whoa...that is quite a story about the beating. *Good grief* My Grampy's southern honour did not believe in violence. He was a strict man of God and a southern gentleman.Cute birth story, though. Mayo Clinic is all about teaching opportunites. You have to expect it there. It can be a bit embarrassing, but it makes them better doctors.
    Have a great weekend!

    1. This took place pre-War of Northern Aggression. Tempers were high. Preston Brooks fought several duels. It appears he was a hot-head. Have a great weekend.

  4. Interesting story about Preston Brooks. That's terrible about the beating! #4 is a cute story. I couldn't agree more about Blue Bell ice cream! We're deprived now that we're in PA. You've been to some great historical places. I've been to the Alamo. I really enjoyed it and hope to go back some day.

    1. The Alamo is great. Hope you can get Blue Bell again soon. Old Preston was a character. Few people remember him. My family remembers him because the man who built McClendon Manor was named for him. He was Preston Brooks Gailey.Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. We ran into the same thing, We have visited many historical sites, most are interesting. Where we live now was once near the site of a large Mexican camp. We have towns near us named Spanish Camp and El Campo. There was a lot of history here. Back in South Carolina, we lived a few miles from where the vote to secede was made. That same town is where Jefferson Davis had his headquarters when the war ended.

    1. One of the most interesting places in Texas is San Antonio. The Alamo is within walking distance of the River Walk. The River Walk has a boat ride that takes you along the river past all sorts of outdoor cafes and restaurants. It is very nice.
