We try to stay out of politics on our blogs. Quite frankly, it seems to alienate our
readers. However, there are times when
we need to speak up. There are several
things we will talk about in the next few weeks.
The first thing is this whole Hire American Buy American
policy that Trump seeks to enact. This
is one of those policies where the whole law of unintended consequences kicks
in.
The first thing we need to do is require that any phone call
that is placed to a United States citizen regarding any type of money owed
(like from a debt collector) must originate here in the United States. The caller ID must disclose the actual name
of the company and the call must be traceable.
How many times have you gotten calls where the person on the
other end was looking for a person who could not be reached at your
number? Telling the person on the other
end of the phone that they had the wrong number did not work because they did
not really understand English.
Customer service representatives must be based here in the
United States as well and really speak and understand English. How many times have you called customer
service and not been able to understand the person on the other end?
We should require that any time anyone calls regarding any
type of financial matter that
they send a letter in English that completely discloses the person’s work address, phone number, and actual legal name, not some alias. The letter must summarize the conversation and disclose the nature of the account, like total balance owed and an itemized listing of all charges with dates.

Calls made to consumers from businesses can only take place
Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 AM and 8 PM local time. The only exception is if the consumer
requests other contact times in writing.
No company can call the consumer on his cell phone unless he has
authorized it in writing.
