Sometime back, I recorded a story I called the Flag Cake. I actually recorded it twice because I learned that most people prefer my stupidity in high definition.
Well, today I am going to tell you that story again with a little more added to it.
Right after the birth of our first-born son, Suzanne wanted to try her hand at decorating cakes. She bought a Wilton course in cake decorating and started trying the different techniques taught in it.
She would make several cakes from scratch each day and when I came home from work and could keep an eye on the baby, she would decorate them.
Each morning, she would send one or two of them to the Western Auto store with me. Wewould give employees and customers a cup of coffee and a piece of cake each morning.
These cakes become very popular. When I got to the store each day, an hour before the store opened, the cast of regulars began to wander in to see what Suzanne had baked.
About that time, Western Auto was introducing a new Flag logo. You had to sign a special contract to be a flag store. Converting to a flag store cost lots of money. Papa decided that we could convert the store ourselves and save a lot of money. So, we set out to do that.
Since Suzanne knew that Papa’s goal was to one day earn the right to fly the Western Auto flag logo, she decided to decorate a special cake for him with the new flag logo.
I took it in that morning and did not cut the cake until Papa could see it. When he did see it, he bragged about it to no end. He then got our cake and took it to the Peoples Bank of Iva. This was our hometown bank. He was always trying to impress the bank people.
He took it to them and said, “Look a there at what my daughter-in-law Su Dee Lou did.” He was a proud Papa-in-law.
Imagine, if you will, how overwhelmed he would be with these new gravity cakes. They look amazing. It almost looks like these cakes defy gravity.
This new cake decorating book Gravity Cakes tells people how to make these truly amazing cakes. If Papa were alive today, Suzanne could make him one of these and he would grin even bigger when he took them to the bank.
