Wednesday Hodgepodge 30 May 2017

1. What makes you feel accomplished? Explain.

I know that my talking about YouTube videos is getting old. However, I feel a sense of accomplishment when I nail it with C. Moore Hamlet in a video.  When I pick him up, I have no idea what he is going to say.  I started putting him in the videos as a comical (hopefully) reward for finishing the video.

2. If you had your own talk show, who would your first three guests be? Tell us why.

I would love to have Suzanne as my guest but, that ain’t happening.  I would say Albert J. Zdenek, Jr., CPA/PFS.  He is the author of Master Your Cash Flow.  After we reviewed his book, he contacted us and we have had some very informative discussions.

Another person I would like to have is Dr. Timothy J. Harris.  He is a long-time friend and is now a reverend.  I was his practice heathen back when we were teenagers.  Tim always has a way of breaking complicated things down where even this ol’ redneck can understand them.  He has degrees in business and theology.

The third person would be the late Zig Ziglar.  Listening to this man’s tapes while I was failing call after call while selling for the U. S. Chamber of Commerce kept me going.  Of course, if I were going to interview deceased people I would have to include my father.  He was a super top salesman.   I wish I had paid more attention to him when he was around.  It is amazing how the older I get, the smarter he gets.

3. Do you have a great burger recipe? What's in it? What do you like on a hamburger and where is your favorite spot to order one out?

Yes and no.  If I were going to make the perfect hamburger, I would use patties made by Bubba Burger.  These are great patties and taste so good.  Forget about all the hype about angus beef.  I would have lettuce, tomatoes, Dukes’ Mayonnaise, onion, and American cheese.

If I were going to pick a hamburger out, I would love to go back to the day when Dud’s Burger Shak was back in Iva (yes, they did spell shake without the E). When I came out of the coma back in 1976, all I wanted was a Dud burger.  The hospital was trying to get this little skinny boy to eat. The chief of staff told the kitchen to fix me anything I asked for.  Well, I asked for a Dud burger.  They could not make them the same way.  They called Tom Dudley and asked how to fix one.  He told them. It was not the same.  He drove thirty miles to take them two of his patties for the kitchen to cook.  It was not the same.

4. What's the biggest anxiety producing thing you do on a regular basis?

I can’t really think of anything.  Every month as we get towards the end of the month and the money's all gone, I get a little anxious.  But, God is good and, even though the wolf is at the door, God keeps it at bay.  That is the only thing I can think of.

5. This is the last Hodgepodge of May. Tell us about your summer plans.

Our summer plans are pretty much the same as any other time of the year.  We will stay at the house most of the time.  It is too hot outside during the summer, so we will only venture out in the dead of the night or in the relative cool of the morning.  The air conditioner in the car is broken and we don’t have the money to fix it.  So, as long as we can hold on, we won’t go anywhere.

Suzanne will sit out on the patio and take pictures of wildlife.  Even though we live in the city, there is a great deal going on back there.  Birds and their babies.  Squirrels and their babies. Snakes, and other critters.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Thank the good Lord, I have made it past the one year mark for my strokes.  This means, I have beaten the odds.  I am not out of the woods by any means, but we will get there.

Recently, we have been asked to post guest articles pertaining to personal finances.  We usually do so because they fit well with the How to Manage Your Monkey blog.  Well, it appears that there is a great deal of concern about not having enough savings to make it through the retirement years.

Many people will outlive their money.  I was forced into retirement back in 1996 and we have outlived our money.  Believe me, it is no fun trying to squeak by on the little that Social Security pays out.

If you have not already done so, sit down with your special somepony and have a frank talk about finances.  Then, go together and speak with a financial expert like a financial planner. Before you go, conduct a little research online, like reading articles written by Albert J. Zdenek, Jr., and others.  Read all you can so that, when you sit down with your financial expert, you know the right things to ask.

You might not think there is anything that a financial advisor can do for you.  You may be surprised. Remember, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.  The second best time is right now.

  1. Great financial advice. Too many people end up with too much month at the end of the money, and can't even consider any type of long-term financial planning.

  4. I've never heard of a Dud Burger but that is one great story you shared. I am very happy to hear that you made it past the one year mark of your stroke. Praying that things continue to stay that way.

    1. Thank you. The hospital never did get it right. I think the key ingredient was that it was made with love. Have a great week.

  5. You're right, I wouldn't be a guest. I wouldn't want to break your camera. :)
    I love you, my Zing.

  6. Good financial advice. I'm afraid my husband and I were pretty stupid about stuff when we were young. The problem is that he is still not on board with any of the things I've tried to institute.

Snakes in the city. You have snakes in the city?! Well, there goes one of the few good things I'd find in city living. LOL

    1. There is an old saying. People don't plan to fail, they fail to plan. Planning now will make the difference between waiting for the social security check to come in so you can eat, and being able to eat well.
