Wednesday Hodgepodge 14 June 2017

From this Side of the Pond

1. The Hodgepodge lands on June 14th this week, Flag Day in the US of A. Do you fly your country's flag at home? Sometimes, often, or every single day? Have you ever visited the city of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia)? Did you make a point of seeing The Betsy Ross House? Have you ever made a trip to Baltimore? If so, was Fort McHenry on your itinerary? (where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write The Star Spangled Banner)

We have a flagpole in the carport.  I have not installed it.  We don’t fly the flag, but have intentions to do so whenever I am healthy enough to install the flagpole and can find all the tools and the flagpole all at the same time.

2. Red flag or white flag? Which have you encountered most recently? Explain.

We live in Gulf Coast Texas where a red flag means a burn ban and dangerous fire conditions.  We live under a red flag for much of the year most years.

We live in Texas where no one flies a white flag.  Never surrender.  People here still remember the Alamo where Santa Anna flew a red flag to symbol “No Quarter”, which meant that every last man who stayed in the Alamo would die.  No white flags here.  Victory or die.

3. Are you a stay in the car listen to the end of a song kind of person? What kind of person is that?

The radio in our car is messed up right now.  Sometimes it will play the USB and sometimes it won’t.  However, when we do listen to the radio when a good song is playing when we reach our destination, we are likely to sit and listen to the end of the song.

That kind of person is the kind that loves good music and likes the feelings each song gives them.

4. What are some of the traits or qualities you think a good dad possesses? In other words, what makes a good dad? What's an expression you associate with your father?

A good dad listens and also tries to teach his children through example.  A good dad is a praying dad.  He tries to instill truth, justice, and the Christian way in his kids. And he needs a sense of humor.

My father used to always say, “You ain’t gonna learn no younger.”  This meant that now is the time to do or learn whatever it is.   He also used to say as a funny curse, “May all your children be born naked.”

5. What's one rule you always disagreed with while growing up? Is that rule somehow still part of your adult life? Is that a good or bad thing?

Children should be seen and not heard.   I didn’t agree with it then.  I still don’t .  Now, if a child is running wild, they should be calmed down so that a conversation can be carried on.

Once I was talking with a young pastor.  His only child was about 2 and wasn’t really talking yet.  Our youngest son approached me and had something to ask me, so he did.   I bent down and answered him, and then the pastor told him that he should not interrupt adults when they were talking.

I told this pastor, in no uncertain terms, that what my wife and children had to say to me would ALWAYS be more important than what anyone else had to say.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

It seems that more and more things around here are going haywire.  The A/C in the car is out, my computer crashed and I am sharing Suzanne’s.   And other things too numerous to mention.  This means that God is gearing us up for a major miracle.  We know that the flood gates of heaven are just about to open and show us a major outpouring of God’s mighty miracles.

Have a great week.

  1. You'd almost think those Texan/Texians were Irish. I agree with never surrender.

Papa sure had some interesting sayings over the years. :)

    Love you.

    1. You are right, we Irish don't know the meaning of the word Surrender. I love you. Zing! Zing!

  2. Good for you for saying that to the pastor! Hopefully he remembered that lesson in his future.
    Funny curse...made me smile!
Praying that you have a turn for the better. Sometimes it seems that when 1 thing breaks, several other things do at the same time. When it rains it pours. :)

    1. That pastor did not last long. I don't know where he is now.

Sometimes it seems that everything is working to make life difficult. However it might be like the little boy who was overjoyed when he encountered a room full of horse manure. He smiled from ear to ear and said, "Oh boy, with this much manure here, there must be a pony in here somewhere."

With this much stuff going on, God must have a miracle coming.

  4. Sorry for all those repairs. I do think cars crumble continuously, one part at a time. Ugh. We want to put up a flagpole, but haven't gotten around to it yet. It may not happen this summer, might be more of a fall task now. Have a good day!

  5. Children should be seen and not heard...I heard that one from my dad a lot. Hated it and never, ever said it to my kids.

Sure hope stuff stops going on the fritz for you. It sure makes life tough when you hit a spell like that.

    1. My mom always said that. She did that especially when my parents were expecting guests. I never said that to our kids.

    1. Thanks. It is important to let our kids speak when they need to. They should be quiet when the situation warrants, like at the movies or in church. Otherwise, let 'em talk.
