Wednesday Hodgepodge 21 June 2017

1. The first day of summer rolls in later this week. What are ten things you'd put on your list of quintessential summer activities? Will you try to manage all ten this summer?

Back in the day, I would have said that barbecuing was something that had to be done in the summer.   Don’t confuse grilling with barbeque.  Anyone who says, “I barbeque steaks” should be forced to get rid of his grill.  Barbeque is the slow cooking of meat, usually with sauce or some kind of dry rub on it.

Swimming, eating watermelon, making homemade ice cream, watching lightning bugs, etc.

We no longer have a grill and, even if we did, could not afford any meat to put on it. Other than sweating more, I don’t see that we will do anything this summer that most people relate to summer.

2. Do you collect seashells when you're at the beach? What do you do with them once you get them home? What's your favorite place to comb for seashells? How many of these 'best beaches for hunting seashells' have you visited? Which one would you most like to visit?

Calvert Cliffs State Park (Maryland), Jeffrey's Bay (South Africa), Sanibel Island (Florida), Shipwreck Beach (Lanai Hawaii), Ocracoke Island (North Carolina), Galveston Island (Texas) and The Bahamas

I have been to Galveston Island, Texas, back when I was a boy.  Now, we live about 100 miles from there, but have not been there since we moved to Texas.  We live about 60 miles from Matagorda Bay.  Our youngest daughter lives on an island just off the Texas coast.  It is not likely that I will visit any beach.  We used to go to Matagorda Beach to collect shells, but have not been there in years.

I nearly died at North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and get very nervous at the beach.

3. At a snail's pace, shell out money, come out of your shell, go back into your shell, drop a bombshell, happy as a clam, clam up...which 'shell' phrase could most recently be applied to some event or circumstance in your life? Explain.

I think maybe drop a bombshell.  That was back around the first of the year when our son told us he planned to get married to a girl he had never met.  It appears, so far, he is as happy as a clam.

4. What summer activity do you dislike? Why?

Going outside.  It is just too darn hot out there and there are mosquitoes everywhere.  However, we have a carport that is sort of like a breezeway that makes sitting outside watching the birds a little slice of heaven.  I like to sit out there and read while Suzanne takes pictures of birds.

5. What's something you see as quickly becoming obsolete? Does that bother you?

Reading and proper grammar.  Due to the nature of our lifestyle and our blogs, we get tons of books to preview.  We see many books these days that don’t use any type of proper grammar.  I know I am bad at it, too.  However, some of the things we see make the mistakes I make pale by comparison.

Also, common courtesy.  You see very little of it these days.   Our neighbors’ children are an exception to this.  They are very polite and friendly.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Y’all stand by to see a major miracle coming our way from God.  I don’t know where, when, or how, but it has to be coming.  With all the things that are working against us right now, He has to be getting ready to say, “Hey y’all, watch this.”  Our God is an Awesome God and He often arrives, just like the US Calvary, just in time.  He is rarely early, but NEVER late.

Finally, Suzanne has produced a new T-shirt to our Manian Debil Productions line up.  You can buy it at Amazon.  It comes in several sizes and colors.  It is in men’s, women’s, and children’s styles.  Also, remember that this coming Monday, all of our ebooks: Shattered, How to Pay Off Your Debt, and Is Homeschooling Right for You, will be free.

  1. I think eating watermelon was one of the absolute best things about summertime as a kid. I loved it, but oh, what a sticky mess it made. :)
    I love you, my Zing!

    1. I always loved to eat watermelon. No fork, just put my face in it and eat it. I love you. Zing! Zing!

  2. Happy to hear that your son and his wife are doing well. That was a huge risk to marry someone he had never met. We battle with mosquitos here too in Minnesota - plus deer flies which are particularly bad this year. They have a rather painful sting - worse than a mosquito. Your carport/breezeway sounds like it is an ideal place to enjoy the summer and the birds!

  3. Watermelon is definitely one of my favorite things about summer, and I forgot to put that on my list. We are really enjoying the birds in our backyard this summer. We put up a bluebird house and bluebirds have already called it home. Lots of goldfinch, cardinals, heron, and more which are really fun to watch. Stay cool in that Texas heat!

  4. I agree good manners are going by the wayside.Children can't be expected to learn manners when their parents don't have any themselves. Some adults have the most atrocious manners.
I will wait with you for your miracle. I will pray for you too.

    1. Thank you for your prayers. The miracle is coming soon. We know some kids who have great manners but their parents are terrible. Have a great day.

  5. Well, God bless you...I can't think of anything I'd rather do less than be outside, in the South, in the summer. All that heat and humidity. Ick!
I don't review books these days, but I am in agreement with you. It shocks me how many books make it past the editors filled with mistakes. I guess even they just aren't taught such things these days.

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. It was rare for old books to have even one grammar mistake or typo. Now, even though we have spell check and grammar check, they get in all the time.

  7. Proper grammar is definitely on its way out. I teach English to college freshmen and man, it's a struggle.

    1. When our youngest daughter was attending the local junior college, one of her professors had them exchange papers for each other to grade. The girl who got her paper corrected her spelling of your to UR. She said that is the way it is spelled.
