Friendly Fill Ins 04 August 2017

This is a fun meme co-hosted by 15 and Meowingand McGuffy's Reader. Be sure to visit and join in the fun!

Here are the fill-ins:

1. Meetings are generally a waste of time.

Back when I worked in the corporate world, I had to attend a lot of meetings.  With the exception of the cemetery where I would tell the crews what funerals we had that day and in which gardens, there was really no reason for the meeting to begin with.

Usually a group of people get together and one person drones on and on about results that are expected and the new policies that some moron from corporate (who had no idea how the job really works) designed and everyone would forget about were discussed.

In the next meeting, we would do it all over again.

2. Rules are meant to be bent beyond all recognition.

My father taught us that it is better to ask forgiveness than to beg permission.

Once we were visiting the Arlington National Cemetery.  We were at a monument and near the monument was a flagpole that had some sort of bronze marker at its base.  Between us and the flagpole was a chain with a sign that said “Do Not Cross - Authorized Personnel Only”.

My father, a former Air Force Training Instructor, crossed anyway because he wanted to read the marker.   Everyone else was telling him he was going to get in trouble.

About the time he got to the flagpole, a jeep with two MPs in it came sliding to a halt.  The MPs jumped out of the jeep and headed towards Papa and the flagpole.

Papa did not bat an eye.  He just looked up at the two and said, “Y’all havin’ a funeral today?”  Both MPs snapped to attention and said, “Yes, Sir!” .  They then proceeded to lower the flag to half mast.  I would have peed my pants.

3. The best time to record videos is in the middle of the night.

In order to record, we have to turn off the A/C so that the noise does not get in the video.  With the A/C off, it quickly reaches 112 in the studio.  Therefore, it is better to record while it is still a cool 90 degrees outside rather than wait till the temp crosses into the 100s.

4. I have learned not much, I am a guy.

Hammie's Store
Suzanne has a saying she used to use with the kids.  “What happens when we don’t listen to mama? Either someone gets hurt or something gets broken.”

This was always true.  When Suzanne told one of us kids not to do something, or to do something, if we did not listen someone would get hurt or something would get broken.

The first time one of us kids did that was right after Suzanne and I got married.  I was sitting in the living room of our first house and I noticed that tapping an empty Smurf glass on my knee made a cool sound.  She said, “Don’t do that. You are going to hurt yourself.”  I told her it did not hurt and it sounded so cool.

Well, the next morning my knee was swollen up bigger than my head.  I could not put any weight on it.  Since part of my job involved climbing ladders, this was a serious problem.  I went to Doctor Baird and he told me I should have listened to Suzanne.

To this day, my knee will swell up on occasion from that old wound.

We hope to have a new episode of the Hammie Show out this Monday.  If all goes well, he will be here then. Tune in Monday.  Same Hammie Time.  Same Hammie Channel.

  1. I don't know that I agree 100% with the idea of it being better to ask forgiveness than permission, but sometimes maybe it is the only way. I do think that sometimes life requires us to break the rules to make a difference.
    I love you, my Zing.

    1. You are right. Sometimes conventional wisdom is not wisdom at all. Swing towards the fences.

  2. I am sorry, David. I cannot agree that rules are meant to be broken. Sometimes, however, they should be questioned, reevaluated, perhaps even changed. But, I see what is happening in our own society. Anything goes! A lawless society is a Godless one. That is scary to me.
I was in a LT. in ROTC, so I know that officers know and can do things that enlisted can not. Was your dad an Officer? The MPs did the right thing. Protecting Arlington is a very serious job.
Have a great week. Stay cool!

    1. If we obeyed the rules, there would be no Christianity because it was against the rules to speak about Jesus. Remember that many early Christians paid with their lives for breaking the rules. Lawless and Godless are two separate things. Most Germans obeyed their law to the letter and yet they were Godless.

There would be no United States because it was against the rules to question the king. Yes, we should break the rules when they are wrong but we should expect to pay the consequences.

    2. I understand what you are saying. I think we interpret "rules" differently. But, that is the essence of human nature. It is okay to agree to disagree. Like you, I mean no harm when I share my thoughts. Truly. God knows that. Anyone who knows me knows that. And, yes, there are always consequences for our actions. Peace.

  3. Thank you for participating in the fill-ins, I enjoyed your answers. We both agree on #'s 1 and 2. That is a great story about your Dad not following the rules. I look forward to another Hammie video. Have a great weekend!

  4. Meetings can be a waste of time but if they have food it's kinda ok. Not sure how I feel about your #2. I think rules are necessary but not blindly followed. I think there are 10 "rules" we should respect and adhere to and if we did others wouldn't be needed.

    1. You are so right about the ten rules. There are two in the New Testament that should also be followed. I am not against all rules, just those that don't make sense. Have a great week.

  6. In many discussions, the difference between rules and laws comes into play. When a human law goes against what The Almighty has said, we obey Him not men. If the rule or law doesn't violate His commands, we should obey or have an extremely good reason for being an exception (such as my example about yelling for help in a library if someone has a heart attack).

    1. There are rules such as don't smoke while in a fueling area that just make sense. We see people who have reached a higher level of stupid who ignore these rules. Some rules are okay. Others are simply wrong. Those wrong rules should be bent. Have a great week.
