September 2017 Where I Come From

This meme is called 2017 September's Where I Come From Challenge
This challenge is based on Kenny Chesney's song "Back Where I Come From".  Suzanne over at PS-Annie! and McClendon villa has included home-and hometown-related questions to round out our 30 days of posts.
Come on and join in.  It will be a blast.
Today’s question is:

6. Did your town have a river running through or near it? What was its name?

About 8 miles from the town is the Savannah River.  Lake Hartwell is along the Savannah.  There is also a river called Rocky River nearby.  Lake Secession is on
Rocky River.

We used to go fishing in both rivers and at the many lakes in the area.  I never caught anything.

Once, just after I got my EMT license, we had a search and rescue on the Savannah River.  A boy had been swept down the river by the current.  The Hartwell Dam was programmed to open in a few hours.  We had to find him.

At that time, the Army Corps of Engineers was building the Lake Richard B. Russell reservoir down river from Hartwell Dam.

There were lots of places that were US Government property and off limits.
The Corps of Engineers worked with us to hold off on opening the floodgates but due to stress on the dam, they had to open soon.  The boy had drowned and he was found.

The scenery was beautiful.  The situation was not.

    1. It was a very sad situation. The rest of the story is even worse. The adults decided to ride to town to buy beer. They left the little boy at the campsite and when they came back, he was gone.
