Today’s question is:
12. On the opposite side of the fence, did you know of anyone engaged in an illegal activity? (In the song, they mention moonshine.)
When I grew up, the speed limit was 55 MPH. Coors beer was considered to be bootleg on the east side of the Mississippi River. Most people I knew were trying to outrun the law. Fuzzbusters and scanners were all the rage. Yes, I knew moonshiners. I knew people who bootlegged 8-track tapes.
Every gas station in the area had a back room where “movies” were shown. Poker games were illegal if money was involved, but it happened.
Back then, hooking up your own telephone could land you in federal prison. Most people I knew had one or two contraband phones.
But, then again, at that time the only way the cops would catch a crook was if he walked into the jail, just like Otis from Mayberry, and locked himself up.
Yikes, lots of illegal stuff.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is. Back then we joked about "telephone cops" after an episode of WKRP in Cincinnati aired where Johnny Fever smashed a phone. Later, we found out there really were telephone cops. Have a great week.
