We hate it when we cannot give a Christian book all five stars. We fret and pray over the review we will write. That being said, A Champion Game Plan for Life by Preston Brown is meant to be a devotion book, but sometimes gets a little more towards trying to teach than you normally expect.
That problem really isn’t so bad. The few grammatical errors are not so bad, but some of those like where the author used the word want when he clearly meant won’t and misuse of possessives are a bit distracting but not egregious.
The real reason we had to lower our rating is because the author takes it upon himself to rewrite scripture. He often paraphrases scripture references to make a point. Sometimes this point is lost.
He also clearly missed what Jesus was doing with the man who was laying by the pool hoping to get into the healing waters (John Chapter 5 Verses 1-8).
In the NIV this reads:
Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

Somehow Mr. Brown uses this passage to show that this man, a man who had been trying to get in the water first for thirty-eight years, was comfortable with where he was in life. He goes on to say that the man’s life had been wasted. Perhaps, but the crippled man had no choice; he was trying the only thing he believed would fix him.
The point of this story of a miracle isn’t to show a man who was comfortable with where he was in life. The point is to show Jesus’ love and healing miracles and how the Jewish leaders dismissed the miracle. They were only concerned that the healing had taken place on the sabbath.
It would have been good if the author had provided the name of the Bible translation he used. We give A Champion Game Plan for Life four stars. We feel that God said what He meant when The Holy Spirit inspired the Biblical writers to pen each word.
