Here are the fill-ins:

1. Super Bowl Sunday really does not mean that much to me.

I really don’t pay much attention to pro football.  The spirit just isn’t there. For me, college ball is much better. The spirit is there. This year our hometown boys, The Clemson Tigers, won the College Football National Championship. I did not watch that game.  We don’t have satellite or cable television.

2. Baseball bores me.

We have a friend who once said that watching baseball is about as much fun as watching paint dry.  We agree, but during the years when The University of South Carolina (THE USC) Gamecocks were in the College World Series, we were all in it.  It was enjoyable then. When I was younger, I played little league baseball, badly.

3. If you have Jesus, you have everything.

We all need Jesus.  It is also nice if you have someone to love who loves you right back.  I really could not imagine life without Jesus or Suzanne.

4. My skill set could get me a job at any good collection agency.

When I worked for collection departments at various banks and finance companies, I always made my numbers. When I worked for a collection agency, I always surpassed my quota. The thing about that is I was never your typical collector.

I have always believed that there are people who do not have the means to pay, you can’t do anything about that. There are people who have made up their mind that they absolutely refuse to pay.  You can’t do anything about that.

But, there are those people who have had a temporary setback.  They want to pay, but need someone to help them find a way to work it out.  Those are the people who can be helped.

I learned collecting by watching my father collect.  I learned WRONG by watching him. A bill collector can’t be apologetic. Bad things happen to good people.  Unfortunately, when something bad happens to good people, they pay the ones who are the most vocal about the past due credit.  Papa was a great salesman. He was a terrible businessman and an even worse collector.

After my father died, I went to work for a few different places where I had to collect. I learned that Papa’s way doesn't work.

My brother went to work for a collection agency.  Later, I worked for the same company. I learned my brother learned the lessons Papa taught and could not get out of that mindset.

Suzanne and I together have the skillset to operate small retail stores.  When she and I worked together, the sales soared.

Suzanne is a world class, and I mean this, merchandiser.  Three national companies delivered to one of the stores we worked for.  These companies track their sales in store very closely. The philosophy these companies sell by works really well for large stores.

Suzanne did not think their way was right at the stores where we worked.  She decided to change it up. She moved things around and all of a sudden vice presidents from three national companies that are the best in the field came to the store to ask questions and take pictures.  Suzanne increased sales by at least 19% in each product line. There were over thirty product lines represented by these companies. One product line increased by over 400%. I strongly suspect that a horse had something to do with us going from selling two cases of that product to over ten cases per week. It happened because a horse started using the product.  I am not making that up.

Have a blessed week, Y’all.

  1. Thank you. I enjoyed merchandising, most of the time, but I am very glad to not have to do it anymore.
    I love you, my Zing!

  4. Thank you for joining in on the Friendly Fill-Ins! I have never had much of an interest in sports. Baseball and golf are probably the ones that bore me the most. And you are so right with #3. You can never have too much Jesus. Have a blessed day!
