Here are the fill-ins:

1. Hot dogs and coleslaw go hand in hand.

Back home in Anderson, South Carolina, we make the best hot dogs on
the planet.  There is a small, family-owned chain of hot dog restaurants
where all they sell is hot dogs.  The place is named Skin’s, after their
founder Skin Thrasher. Come on now, it is the South, where we have
unusual names and nicknames.

If I remember correctly, Skins started out as a walk-up kind of
restaurant, like McDonald’s used to be.  You would walk up to a window
and place your order. You would walk down to the next window and
pick up your order.  The hot dogs were/are inexpensive and very good.
Around there, all the way means chili, mustard, and onions.  They have
potato chips in bags and soft drinks in cans. You can get a side order
of their world famous cole slaw.  If you miss the cole slaw, you missed
the best part.

We also had a place in Greenwood, South Carolina, called Barretts.  This
was a mom and pop kind of convenience store. It sat right across the
street from Greenwood Memorial Gardens, where I used to work.

First thing in the morning, they would make a crock pot of chili and
soon would start the roller grill.  The hot dogs were inexpensive and
very good.

And then there is The Dump.  If you have ever watched my video called
Newspaper Diapers, you know all about The Dump.  Well, The Dump
had some very good hot dogs, too.

Suzanne says I eat my hot dogs like a Yankee because sometimes I like
to have a hot dog with a bun, wiener, mayonnaise, and coleslaw on
it.  Don’t make the mistake of ordering a slaw dog. Don’t make the
mistake of ordering a chili dog if what you want is a hot dog with chili
on it.

Around our parts back in South Carolina, if you said you wanted a slaw
dog you got a bun with coleslaw in it. If you said you wanted a chili dog,
you got a bun with chili in it. You would not get the wiener unless you
said you wanted a hot dog.

2. Jesus makes my heart happy.

I serve a Risen Saviour who is always here for me.  It makes me happy
to know that He has my back in anything.

Music also makes my heart happy.  I love to listen to music. When it
is good old Southern Gospel music, it’s even better.  If you get a chance
to listen to Catlin Tierce, you have a rare treat.

3. Don’t be afraid to speak up and say what is on your mind.

Too often people put up with crappy service. Recently, our two daughters
went into Walmart to get some specialty food items we needed for
making a video. Before we went, we verified that the store had the
items in stock by checking the website and the app.

Our daughters asked for help in finding the items from several different
employees, who each told them that Walmart did not sell the items and
that they should go to H.E.B. to find what they were looking for.

Suzanne and I were waiting in the car because I have problems with my
feet.  The girls called the car and so I went in the store. I went to
CUSStomer service and told the worker that I wanted to speak to the
store manager or the assistant manager on duty.  I told her not to
bother me with anyone who wasn’t the highest ranking person in the
store at that time.

It turns out that the assistant manager in charge was one of the ones
who had not helped our daughters and told them to go to H.E.B.  He
and I had a word of prayer. I told him that I was not aware that
H.E.B. had bought out Walmart. I told him that I was going to go
back the the shelve and look at every item in the grocery section and
when I found it, I would let him and Walmart know what bad service I
received.

He finally decided he should actually go look.  I followed along on the
handicapped cart, which does not move very fast. Just as I turned onto
the aisle where he went, he found it.  I said to him, “Welcome to H.E.B.”

If I go in a restaurant and get bad food or bad service, you can bet I
will speak out about it. In this little town, Suzanne and I were searched
out by the owner of the Denny’s.  He came in the convenience store
where I was working and asked us to go to his Denny’s and try it. He
gave us a copy of his business card with a note on the back that got us
a major discount on the food.

We soon discovered that when either he or his sons were not there, the
service was great.  If he or his sons are there, the service is terrible.
I told him so. We haven’t been back in years.

4. If running my mouth was a sport, I would win hands down.

My kids hate it.  If we go into the Walmart, H.E.B., or any of the
convenience stores owned by the family we used to work for, I will get
into a conversation or ten or twenty, that will each last at least 20
minutes.

Sometimes I will get into conversations with people I don’t even know
and they will last that long.

I guess I am an oddball. I am one of those people who can go into a
room full of strangers and not open my mouth.  I will just sit and listen.
But, if called on to speak, I am not backed up about standing in front
of the room and giving an impromptu talk about whatever.

I remember once inviting a friend to youth night at our church.  The
youth pastor is a good friend of mine and we are closer than some
brothers.  At the end of the service, the youth pastor, Eddie, called
on me to give the closing prayer  My friend told me afterwards that if
that ever happened to him at his church he would just die. He would
crawl up under the pew and die.

There is actually a whole lot more to this story that I will tell someday.
Like in the movie The Beverly Hillbillies, someone asks Jed how he got
to California.  He says, “That’s a long story.” Granny pipes up and says,
“But he don’t mind tellin’ it.”  I don’t mind telling you a long story.

  1. That newspaper diaper incident has to be one of the funniest that we've experienced as parents.:)
    I love you, my Zing!

  2. Thank you for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. I think it is good you speak up when something is not right. Everything is so expensive now that the least they can do is give good service. That is odd that the Walmart worker would push you to another store. For your #4 answer, you are not an oddball, you are clearly an extrovert :) Have a nice weekend!

  3. TW is very shy but she will complain in a store. There are several she can't even go into anymore. Tell your wife that we Yankees put mustard and sauerkraut on hot dogs. Some mix mustard and ketchup on their dogs. Don't think I've ever seen anyone at a game putting mayonnaise or cold slaw on one.

  4. Great answers. I so agree with #3 and I need to remember to follow it. Have a great week!

  5. Thank you for joining in on the Friendly Fill-Ins! You always have such fantastic answers, so well thought out. Your #2 is perfect. And I am working on #3 myself. Sometimes I have no trouble speaking up for myself, but other times I am terrible at it. Have a blessed day!
