Wednesday Hodgepodge - 14 September 2016

Wednesday Hodgepodge - 14 September 2016

Please click the button below to hop on over and say howdy to Joyce and play along with her fun Wednesday Hodgepodge. Be sure to wish her a happy birthday while you're there!

1.     What's changed in your life, home, or community since your last birthday?

In a word, nothing.  Really very little.  Our Marine is underway so, we don’t hear much from him.  We don’t go anywhere; there is no money or desire to do so.  We get up, eat, blog, play with the grand-dog, and go to bed.  Same-o Same-o.  That may sound boring, but it really is a lot better than drama all the time.

2. September is Classical Music Month. Do you like/listen to classical music? If so what's a favorite piece and/or who is a favorite composer?

Yes, we listen to classical music from time to time; Baroque, to be exact. The most popular composer of the genre is probably Handel.

Back in 1985, when we first got pregnant with our oldest child, I researched child learning.  I found a book called Super Learning that summarized some research that showed that Baroque music adjusts the brain waves to make them most susceptible to learning.

If one reads to a child while playing Baroque music, the child will normally retain more of what he hears.

3. Besides The Bible, what's a book that has positively changed your life, relationships, career, or perspective? How so?

I got nothin’.  The book How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success in Selling by Frank Betger is a must read for anyone regardless of career.  Anything written by Zig Ziglar is the same way.   But, life changing?  No, I can’t think of anything like that.

4. I read (here) these ten hobbies will make you smarter...play a musical instrument, read voraciously, meditate regularly, work out your brain (puzzles, sudoku, board games, etc), exercise often, learn a new language, write your feelings down (blog, journal, just write), travel to new places, cook different kinds of meals, participate in sports actively

Are any on this list your current hobbies?  Which hobby on the list would you be most inclined to try?

I used to play the piano, trumpet, and tuba.  However, those days are long gone.  I do read all the time.  I like to read non-fiction books.  And, as most of you reading this also do, I blog.  This particular blog was created to do exactly what the question asks.  On this blog, I journal my feelings and past things. I don’t normally do puzzles.  The only thing I cook is popcorn and the occasional scrambled egg or omelet.  At least, I call what I make an omelet.  Really, it is scrambled eggs with whatever I can find that might go with eggs.  I put in cheese, bacon, onion, bell pepper, ham, just whatever I can get my paws on.

5. What sports traditions does your family have?

Really, none.  When I was a kid, I played baseball.  When I was in college, I was a security guard in the University of South Carolina Gamecock locker room. We sometimes watch ourselves a little SEC football from time to time, but there is so much garbage on television now with all the commercials and the naked people in the stands that we do very little of that.

When THE USC was in the College World Series of Baseball, and won it two years back to back, we watched and enjoyed that, even though watching baseball is about as exciting as watching paint dry.  It was good to see our team win the last game in the old stadium and then, the next year, win the first one in the new stadium.  How cool is that?
.

6. In a few words, weigh in on the current football/National Anthem brouhaha. Keep it family friendly please.

I have no clue what is going on here.  When it comes to professional football, I don’t have a dog in that fight.   I am unaware of the brouhaha.  However, the national anthem should be played with respect and dignity.  All who can should stand and place their hands over their hearts.  Anyone who would show disrespect to our flag, our national anthem, or any service member, should be immediately deported.

We may not agree with who is in office or what the powers that be stand for in this country.  But, our country was bought and paid for with the blood of our ancestors.  As such, we owe it to them to respect what they fought for.

If the question is 'is it wrong for the players to kneel instead of stand' then, the answer is that it is perfectly respectful, and even preferred, for the players to kneel than for them to stand.  We should all stand, or kneel, to show our respect.

7. Where do you have loads of patience, and where do you most lack patience?

I have never been accused of being patient in anything.   I most lack patience with stupid.  When I find a clerk who cannot do their job because they are not trained properly, I have a little patience.  If they cannot do their job because they cannot count, or cannot follow simple logic, then I am ready to blow a gasket.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Our service members need our prayers more now than ever before.  I know you probably pray for them all the time.  But, now is the time to do even more.

I am thankful to make it through another week on this side of the dirt.  As you may be aware, I have made it past the 90-day mark stroke-free, which is a very good sign.

The Good Lord willing, and the creek don’t rise, we will kick off our How to Manage Your Monkey Course in life recipe on 03 November 2016.  Please join us there and let us know what you think.  The idea is that life balance is a misnomer.  Balance implies that all things are in equal proportions.  Life recipe is meant to indicate that all ingredients are there in the amount that is best suited for the individual and their family at that time.

McClendon Studios Presents: Look, Mommy, Scissors!

McClendon Studios Presents:

Look, Mommy, Scissors!

Suzanne and I, along with our oldest boy Jared, were in the process of moving into our very first apartment.  This was apartment 17-C Country Club Lane in Anderson, South Carolina.  Jared was almost 2 years old.

We had everything scattered about everywhere because of the nature of having to move everything a lot faster than we had intended to.

Somewhere in all this chaos, Jared managed to find a pair of scissors.  He walked towards Suzanne and me opening and closing the scissors.

Both of us tried to remain calm and keep him from hurting himself with them.  Well, he somehow managed to snip the corner of his eye and it was bleeding profusely.  Suzanne handed me a washcloth and my keys and I ran out the door.  I put Jared in his car seat and jumped in the van and took off.

I turned on the emergency flashers. I was driving as fast as I could,
 Anderson City Police Department
but still stopping at all the red lights.  A city police car pulled up beside me with his blue lights on and he rolled down his window.

I rolled down the van window and he asked me, “What’s wrong?”  I replied, “My baby cut his eye with some scissors.”  The officer told me to follow him.  He gave me a police escort to the emergency room and I pulled up to the emergency room door.

I exited the van and got Jared.  I threw my keys to the security guard and told him the paper work was in the van and the cop could arrest me inside as soon as Suzanne got there.

I entered the emergency room and, even though it was typical to wait a long
time for triage for some reason, I was taken back to a room immediately upon walking in the door.

As we entered the treatment room, I put Jared on the bed and it was then I noticed that I had left the house wearing nothing but a pair of gym shorts that did not cover all I would have preferred they covered.  My chest hair was matted with Jared’s blood and I looked like a gunshot victim.

The guard brought the keys to the van and said, “The cop just said for you to go home when you get done.  Don’t worry about a ticket.”

Shortly, Suzanne arrived with my pants.  We waited a very short time and Dr. Gregory Baird arrived and checked Jared out.  He determined that Jared’s eye was okay and that there should be no permanent damage. We were very thankful.
