The problem with good books

The problem with reading a good book is that at some point you finish it. The same is true with watching a good movie or even something like the College World Series. 

When it is over there is a letdown period when I find myself floundering around for something to do.

Normally I am reading six or seven books at a time. Take them along with convenience store industry and finance industry related periodicals and web sites and I find a good part of my day is spent reading. 

The have-to stuff is in book form and on the web. The recreational stuff, the fun stuff, is on my Kindle. I have to say that my Kindle book reader is among my favorite possessions. I can now take an entire library, or at least a good part of it, with me wherever I go.


Today I finished reading a great book. It was called Standing Next to History by Joseph Petro. It is about a secret service agent who helped to protect Ronald Reagan, Dan Quayle and Pope John Paul II, just to name a few. It is a very interesting book. The problem is, now it is over.

In this book, he mentions a movie that I have seen a couple of times. The first time I saw it I thought it was a great movie. It was the edited for television version. Later, I saw it in an unedited version. It was still a great movie but, it used God's name as a swear word. I can't stand this. The name of the movie is Guarding Tess. This is the story of a former first lady (Tess) and her secret service agent. I won't spoil the movie for you but I will say it gets rather interesting.

Getting back to the book... One of the interesting things that Joe mentions in the book is about how much detail was involved with taking Reagan to a baseball game for an inning. 

I have recently rediscovered baseball. I have been watching quite a few baseball movies since the College World Series. I like college sports much better than professional sports because there is more of a spirit to the game when college teams play. High school sports are even better to watch but, since I can't take a road trip to Crescent, I will have to settle for college ball.

It took me months to finish The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas. The problem isn't that I am an incredibly slow reader. The problem is that there are just so many things demanding my attention right now. 

The book itself was great. I have yet to see a movie version of the book that actually comes close to what happens in the book. 

Pretty much, that is the same for all movies made from books. There is so much more to Gone With the Wind than we see on the screen with Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. But, if they had included it all, this four hour movie would have been a mini-series, which was unheard of back then.

I am getting started on Adam Smith’s An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. I imagine it will take me a while to get through this book as well because it is on my recreational list and not on my have-to list.
