Many Strokes Fell Great Oaks. But Not This Time.

Wow! What a week we have had!

It started last Thursday morning when I got up to call our youngest daughter, Maggie, to wake her up in time for class.  The call was very short.  When I hung up the phone, my wife asked if I was OK.   I wasn't.

My wife, Suzanne, and my oldest daughter, Laynie, helped me to the bathroom.  I was having slurred speech and could not walk.I got less slurred in my speech.  So, we thought everything was okay.  Then, I tried to stand up and could not.

Suzanne helped me get dressed and we tried to make it to the car so she could take me to a doctor.   I made it halfway through the carport and fell on her.   Laynie called an ambulance. It was very hot laying there on that driveway.  The ambulance arrived and started to take me to Oakbend Medical Center in Rosenberg, Texas, on Jackson Street. The paramedic radioed the ER and the ambulance was diverted to another hospital, Oakbend at Williams Way, because the original hospital could not see me right away.

The Emergency Medical Team rolled me through the ER straight to CT scan.  I was back in the ER within minutes.  There, I learned I had had a TIA, which is like a temporary stroke.

This TIA was followed by at least two more strokes.

We have had to change life around here somewhat.

We had to stop selling AVON locally like we used to.  You can help us and buy a great product by purchasing online at https://smcclendon.avonrepresentative.com/

We will celebrate our oldest son's 30th birthday by offering our books free on June 5th. David's 54th birthday will be June 6th and the books will be free then, too.   Please help us by downloading and actually reading these books on those days and then providing an honest review on Amazon.com.

We are learning more and more each day about life after a stroke.  What we have learned is that cholesterol and salt are not your friends.  Limit those and take a baby aspirin every day. Drink plenty of water each day.

The following book was suggested by one of the people commenting on Suzanne's blog, PS Annie!
It is an affiliate link. If you click this link and purchase this book, we will receive a commission, and you will be helping to support our family during this time of transition, this life after stroke. Thank you for your support!

Tears to You

Tears To You

The other day I posted about my hospital stay at Oakbend Medical Center and my recent multiple  strokes.  I noticed in the video that it looks like I lost weight.  I had Suzanne weigh me and found I had lost about ten pounds.  This is good.

You might wonder about the title to this post, Tears to You.  It seems that part of a stroke affects people with bouts of extreme tears for no reason.  This is called Pseudobulbar Affect. It appears that extreme rage and inappropriate laughter are a part of this Pseudobulbar Affect as well.

So far, we have only seen the tears.  I bawl like a baby while watching Hotel Transylvania 2.   They say this will pass.  I would like to apologize to my family in advance for any rage I may show.  Remember please, it is the stroke doing this.  I am not really angry with you.

We have found there appears to be cholesterol and sodium hiding in just about everything we use.  We cannot hide from all of this, but we can limit this.

We have also learned that a good written budget plan is a must for anyone.  This is more important after a life event like a stroke because those who must follow along and try to figure out what money is available, what has been paid, and what has yet to be paid need this information.

Often times one person in a family handles the budget.  This may mean that one person knows which accounts are where.  Even though the person does not attempt to keep it all a secret, it is still not something the rest of the family keeps up with..

Like I said previously, things around here have had to change.   We no longer are doing the mobile notary.  We have curtailed selling Avon locally, but you can still buy it thought our online store.

Please help our family by downloading, reading, and commenting on our books. We are going to be offering them free for Jared’s 30th birthday and David’s 54th birthday. This will be June 5 and 6, 2016 .  As an extra special promotion all three books will again be available on Maggie’s birthday, 26 June. Good going, Maggie.

We are asking  you to share our blogs, books, and videos with your circle of influence.   Please keep our family in your prayers.

Pop over and see Suzanne at PSAnnie.  She will share more of our details with  you.

Press Release: Health monitoring smart collar helps pets beat the heat

The following is a press release.  This post does not necessarily reflect the views of Suzanne and David E. McClendon, Sr. or Manian Debil Productions.

BURLINGTON, Mass. – Each summer, pets die from heat-related injuries and it’s not just from being left alone in a vehicle. While pet owners should never leave their pet unattended in a vehicle, they should understand the problems posed by summer heat and that an affordable piece of new technology could save the life of their furry friend before the life-threatening effects of heat set in.
During the summer months, leaving pets outside for extended periods of time and exercising during the mid-day summer heat can have deadly consequences. According to Dr. Asaf Dagan, the chief veterinarian of PetPace, pet owners should understand the unique physical limitations of their pets and leverage technology to keep them safe year-round.
PetPace’s health monitoring smart collar can detect issues like changes in temperature and cardiovascular problems. It can also help pet owners mitigate the serious effects higher temperatures have on pets by notifying owners before injury sets in.
“Heat stress may have serious life-threatening consequences.” said Dagan. “With PetPace, pet owners can stay connected to their pet right from their mobile device and get notified immediately if a problem develops.”
Heat-related illnesses are more prevalent during the summer months for all pets, regardless of physical fitness, age, size or breed. Recognizing heat-related symptoms can prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke if identified quickly. The heat-related death of a pet is preventable if the owner is aware of his or her pet’s signs or symptoms, and products like PetPace’s smart collars can alert pet owners of their pet’s condition before it becomes fatal.
PetPace’s smart collar works like human health monitors, similar to a Fitbit or Apple Watch. The device tracks vital signs like body temperature, pulse, respiration and other measurements including activity levels, body posture, heart rate variability and calorie expenditure.
A dog’s normal body temperature can range between 101 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, while a normal temperature for a cat ranges from 99.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Pet owners should be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which include the following, but are not limited to:
  • Disorientation
  • Collapse
  • Excessive panting and/or distressed breathing
  • Excessive thirst
  • Increased heart rate
  • Weakness and/or fatigue
  • Thickened saliva
  • Frequent Vomiting
If your pet should show signs of a heat-related illness, assist in lowering their body temperature by moving them to a cooler environment, provide fresh drinking water and place cool, NOT ice cold, water-soaked towels on the animal. Pet owners are advised to consult their veterinarian immediately.
Dagan also advises for owners to NOT place the animal in an icy cold tub, as cooling the pet too rapidly can lead to worsening condition.

Share Your World 22 May 2017

What one thing have you not done that you really want to do?

There aren’t many things that I can think of.  If I had all the money in the world, I would really love to get a small RV and Suzanne and I would travel all over the country taking pictures, making videos, and looking into family history.

How often do you get a haircut?

Have you see my videos?  The answer is not very often.  Back when I was younger, I would get one about once every two weeks.  After we moved here, I really did not have a barber that I liked. Then along came Mr. Vic.  Mr. Vic had owned the local barber shop for many years.  He sold the shop and retired.  Then, he got bored so he went back.  He worked as a second chair barber, which meant that he only took customers that did not want to wait.  SInce he was over 80 years old, very few people came in just for him.  But I did.

At first he offered me a free haircut.  Then, I started using him exclusively.  One day I went in and he gave me a cut.  He had to sit on a stool to cut my hair.  He was very shaky, but I did not care.   It is just hair.

A few days later, he came in the store where I worked and looked at my hair and said, “Who cut your hair!”  He was upset because someone had given me a bad haircut.  I told him, “You did.” He said, “Sorry.”  That was the last time I saw Mr. Vic.  He died a few days later.  We all miss him. We love you, Mr. Vic.

In regards to puzzle what’s your choice: jigsaw, crossword, word search or numeric puzzles?

None of the above.   I am just not a puzzle kind of person.  I do word search from time to time, but I really don’t do many puzzles.

How many cities have you lived? You can share the number of physical residences and/or the number of cities.

I was born in Doravile, Georgia, where I lived on Doral Drive.  We moved to Norcross, Georgia, where I lived on Greenwood Drive.

We moved to Inman, South Carolina, where  I lived on Wedgewood Drive.

We moved to Iva, South Carolina, where we bought and renovated the Preston Brooks Gailey Place and renamed it McClendon Manor.  I went to college at the University of South Carolina, where I lived in my first trailer and then in a beautiful house.

Then, I transferred to the main campus of THE USC (the University of South Carolina, in Columbia, South Carolina.

I moved back to Iva, South Carolina, to McClendon Manor and my chlid bride Suzanne and I got married and lived on East Green Street and then Poplar Street.

Then, we moved to Anderson, South Carolina.  Then to Starr, South Carolina, then to Greenwood, South Carolina.  Then, we moved back to Anderson, South Carolina.  Then back to Starr, South Carolina.  Last, we moved to Wharton, Texas.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Last week we really did not do anything.  However, I am thankful that my computer did not die.  It looked very much like that was going to happen. Fortunately it worked itself out.

This computer is the one I use to write my reviews on.

This week, we celebrate the one year mark of me being stroke-free.   The first stroke was on May 26.  Today, 22 May, our books are free.  Please see the sidebar.  The graphics might show that it is still 99¢ but once you follow the link it should show as free.  Please get them today while they are free.

We are also looking forward to having more birdie visitors to our backyard so Suzanne can take their pictures.

I can use your help.  As you know, the only way we can keep our reviewer
ranking with Amazon is if we keep our helpful votes up.  Well, a while back, I wrote a review for the book Crazy Stressed.  I marked it down two stars because the doctor, who is allegedly professional, uses the Lord’s name in vain several times.  He also uses quite a few profane words.  And yet, he cautions parents to watch what they do and say because our kids learn more about what they see us do and hear us say than by what we tell them.  Now, we are under attack.  We are getting many negative comments and lots of “Not Helpful” votes.  Please read this review and, if you think it is helpful, please vote helpful.  If not, please do what you think is best.  Thank you.

Guest Post: Learning and Development Books for Kids

The following is a guest post.  This post does not necessarily reflect the views of Suzanne and David E. McClendon, Sr. or Manian Debil Productions.

Learning and Development Books for Kids

Reading skills are one of the most important and basic set of skills toward your child’s success. It can be a fun and imaginative activity for children and opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them.

Here at Offshoot Kids we believe children should have fun when they are learning. Our quirky company produces carefully structured and level-appropriate story-based books that are the perfect stepping stones for 3-5 year-olds.

We focus on making learning fun, and keeping children entertained while educating, delighting, and sparking imaginations.
See what books we think you should be reading with your children!
1. That's My First: Three book series - Book of First Words, Book of Animals and Book of Numbers. These books introduce young learners to new words and numbers through rhymes and beautiful illustrations. All the three books are developed as a visual dictionary because what a child sees, he remembers.

2. To Stick is to Learn: Two book series - Amazing Alphabet and Naughty Numbers. In addition to beautiful illustrations and rhymes, these books focus on the concept of learning by repetition. The child sees the same letters and numbers highlighted and used various types and subconsciously internalizes the formation and usage of the letters and numbers.

3. The Un-alphabet Series: Two book series - How I learned My Language and How I learned My Language II. As the name suggests, both the books in this series are developed on the more usable and easily understandable format of learning to write simpler letters first. This series does not take the child through the traditional method of teaching A to Z in that order, but focuses on helping the child form letter stroke by stroke. These books also have quite a few tips for the parents on how to engage the child more productively.

4. The Baa-Baa Series: Two book series - That's How We Say It and I See I Learn. The two books on sight words and phonics are created to introduce the child to basic sounds and words in a systematic manner.

5. Ten Little Stories: This book takes the child from numbers 1 through 10 in rhymes. Each number is given seven pages. The child sees and reads the number
time and again and internalizes it.

By The Way, Hammie will have his own show starting tomorrow Morning.
