Third Part of My Trip to the Hospital

I had another surgery on the morning of 07 November 2012 and that evening they kicked me out. The ambulance from American Medical Response picked me up just before my supper arrived at Memorial Hermann and got me to Kindred hospital, six miles up the road(the longest route Mapquest will plot for this is 6.4 Miles), two hours after supper was over at Kindred. Even though the farthest route Mapquest will calculate is 6.4 miles, American Medical Response billed for in excess of 11 Miles. I think someone is padding the bill. They also charged me for an I.V. pump and I.V. pump monitoring. I did have an I.V. in the ambulance, but there was no pump used.

I am told that Medicare will only pay for one week at a full service hospital. So, after one week you must be sent home or sent to a Long Term Care Hospital (LTCH).

When I got to Kindred Hospital, my first impression was “this place is horrible.” There was construction work going on in the hospital and the smell of paint and adhesives filled the hall. When I got to the room, there were dirty sheets on the floor and places on the wall where paint had peeled off. There was a bulletin board on the wall with cork peeling off of it. There was also part of the window sill in the floor. In the bathroom, there was a dirty linen cart with no bag on it with dirty linen stacked on the bottom shelf. I thought, “I have gone to hell.”

I told the nurses I did not get food yet, so they scrounged up some chicken salad sandwich parts. I got these sandwich pieces and some graham crackers. Dining services had been closed for a while. Suzanne went to Wendy’s and got me a burger. That was good.

I felt like I couldn’t stay in this place. Fortunately, things got significantly better very quickly. More on this soon.
