September 19 Somethin’ Challenge Day 17

Here we go with day 17 of the September 19 Somethin’ Challenge.  Are you enjoying this? Are
you playing along?
Today’s question is:

Do you remember where you were and/or what you were doing when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded? This happened on 28 January 1986.  Were there any big events going on in your personal life at the time?

A few days before the Challenger disaster, a little black dog was run over in front of the house Suzanne and I were living in.  Suzanne called me and told me about it.

I drove back to the house and found the dog lying by the side of the road.  He was hurt pretty bad, but he looked like he would make it.   I wrapped him up in a blanket and took him back to the Western Auto Store.

I put him near the heater because he was cold.  Shortly, Papa Bruce showed up.  He tried to give the dog away to several people.  He said, “There ain’t nothin’ better than an old black dog.”

I had placed the dog in what we called a bin box.  It was a large plastic container that merchandise came in.  After a little while, Papa came up to me and said, "Take Bin to the house and fix him up in the pink bathroom."
Several times a day, I would go to the house and feed Bin infant formula and nurse him back to health.  We put a radio in the bathroom to keep him company when no one was around.

I was feeding him when I heard about the shuttle on the radio.  I went to the den and turned on the television. There was the tape playing over of the disaster.  I could not believe it had happened.

It turned out that the problem was caused by a bad O ring.  We sold similar O rings at the store for about 19¢.  For less than a quarter, the accident might not have happened.

    1. Bin was a unique dog. He was one of those dogs that no matter what you did could not be contained. We tried keeping him in a fence with Gus, our other dog. It was a huge yard, but Bin would wander off all the time. One day, he wandered off and did not come back.

    1. Bin was actually my father's dog after the accident. But, he lived with us. We had a huge fenced in yard just down the hill from my parents. Bin did not want any part of living in a fence. Gus did not mind it. Bin loved to kill cats. Gus protected his friend Mandy(kitty). Mandy could go anywhere in the fence she wanted to go and Bin would not mess with her because Gus was bigger and stronger than Bin. Other cats were not so fortunate. Bin liked to hunt. He got out and went on walk about all the time. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  3. He was a cute little rascal, but I didn't like that he ate the kitties. That was upsetting to find. I hope wherever he went next was good to him.
