September 19Somethin’ Day 5
What about you? Have you joined this great meme? Are you playing along with the September 19 Somethin’ Challenge? Hop over to McClendon Villa or PS Annie! and get the details. Then, join in.
Today is the fifth day of the challenge. So, here is the question:
Today is Labor Day in the United States. How old were you when you got your first job? What was that job? Did you enjoy it?
When I was about 5 years old, I started collecting Coke bottles at all the construction sites in the area. I would take my wagon to the sites and pick up all the Coke (soda) bottles the workmen had left behind. I worked this just like a job.
When I had a wagon load, my dog Blackie and I would walk about a mile to the Phillips 66 Station and cash them in. This provided me with a good little income.
When I was 12, my family opened a Western Auto Associate Store in Iva, South Carolina. I punched the clock and got paid minimum wage. When I was 16, I decided to get a job on my own and work outside the store. I went to work for Shoney’s in Anderson, South Carolina. I worked as a bus boy and dishwasher. While I was bussing the counter, one of the owners of the local restaurant in Iva saw me and she asked why I did not come to them to get a job. I told her it would be like my father getting the job for me.
I hated every minute of that job and so I quit and went back to work at the Western Auto Store. I loved every minute of working at the Western Auto. It was sort of like the store was our house.
Friends would come by to visit us and take our stuff.
They liked taking our stuff so much that they gave us money for it. It was a great job and a lot of fun.
