Wednesday Hodgepodge 1 March 2017

1. 'Slow and steady wins the race'...tell us about a time this was true in your own life.
It is interesting that this should come up now.  Recently, our youngest son, the Marine, had a “friend” of his send Suzanne an email.  Immediately after sending the email, our son started asking Suzanne what she thought about the girl.

Then, he told us he intended to pop the question as soon as he got stateside.  Shortly thereafter, before he left Okinawa, he told us they plan to get married 3 March.  At that time, he had never seen her in person.  He had only seen her via video chat.

Suzanne and I were engaged from the time she was 16 until the time she was 19.  I think long engagements are good because you learn so much about a person OVER TIME.

Anyone can be anyone they want to be for a short period of time.  Our advice to him has been slow down.

2. 'As slow as molasses'...Do you like molasses? How about maple syrup? Caramel? Butterscotch? What's your favorite of the slow moving treats mentioned here, and what's your favorite food made with that sweet treat?
Molasses is not a big thing around here.  I have not seen it in years.  I do like maple syrup.  It is good on pancakes.  I also like the link sausages that have it in them.  MILD link sausage, to be exact.

I am not really a big syrup fan.  Usually, I eat my pancakes with just spread.

3. Your favorite slow song?

There are many good slow songs out there.  I would have to say though that Elvis’ Are You Lonesome Tonight? would be the one.

There was a short time when Suzanne and I were broke up (I was broke up, she wasn’t).  After a while, I got a phone call from some girl whose voice I did not recognize.

It turned out to be one of Suzanne’s 490 first cousins.  I had met this girl once or maybe twice.  After a brief conversation, she asked me if I wanted to talk to Suzanne.

Suzanne started playing Elvis records over the phone.  I started playing records over the phone, too.  We were taking turns.  It seems that I played the song, “Second Time Around” and then Suzanne played “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”.

Shortly after that, I asked Suzanne to start going with me again.

4. Your favorite thing to make in a slow cooker or crock pot?

In my opinion, one could cook an old shoe in a crockpot and it would be good.

I like to get a whole chicken and have Suzanne cook it as slow as possible in the crockpot.  She serves this over rice and it is great.

Another good thing in the crockpot is pork roast.  One can actually slow cook a pork roast and have a great barbeque.  Or pork roast with vegetables like carrots, potatoes, celery, onions, etc.

A while back, a friend of mine sent Suzanne a recipe for macaroni and cheese in the crockpot.  It was great, but we have misplaced the recipe.

5. 'You may delay, but time will not.' ~Benjamin Franklin Are you more a hurrier or a delayer when it comes to unpleasant tasks that need doing? What are you currently either delaying or hurrying to get through this week or month?

I think Suzanne and I both would rather go ahead and get an unpleasant task out of the way and not have it hanging over our heads.

For the most part, any delays we currently have are caused by others or circumstances beyond our control.

After our whirlwind month of helping a friend, we find ourselves in need of some organization.  The task is overwhelming, but we keep doing a little along and along, hoping to get the task behind us.

6. Tell us three things you encounter regularly or even just occasionally that you find to be annoyingly slow.

Waiting for a doctor is very often annoyingly slow.  Just waiting on other people in general is.  Waiting at the bank is annoyingly slow, too.  It would seem that with modern computers things should have sped up.  Instead, they have slowed down immensely.

7. March is National Craft Month. Are you crafty? Tell us about something crafty you'll try in the next thirty-one days. Or something crafty you'd like to try or wish you had the skill to make happen.

I knit using looms.  I know, it is unusual to find a redneck man who knits and will admit to it, but I do.

I am also fairly handy with building basic things.  I have built some tables that are basic, but are sturdy enough that one could park a bus on them if they wanted to. I have made some bookshelves and somewhere around here is a toy box I built for our youngest daughter.  She and her sister started painting it but never finished.  They were painting it pink, the color she picked out, and then about halfway she decided she did not like the color as much as she thought she did.

When our friend is able to get the piece of tree he is working on cutting up after the tornados, Suzanne will make a clock out of that.  I will attempt to drill a hole in it for the clockworks.

Suzanne and I will also mount a sword on the wall that our youngest son gave us.  He promised to help mount it on the wall, but that was two Christmases ago and he has not been home since.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

We are glad that February is behind us.  We pray our friend will find someone who will work for him and not steal him blind or mistreat him or his adult children.  His current employee is the employee from hell.   Please pray for our friend.

I have a few videos scheduled to shoot later this week.  Some of them are shout outs to good friends we became reacquainted with while helping our friend.  They should be up in the next few weeks.

Also, we have tons of reviews we need to get posted soon.  These have been delayed by our friend’s project so, please don’t feel like we have become just a review site.  We will only endorse products we really like and can get behind.  We will provide reviews on a few turkeys, too.  But when we think they are not as good as they could be, we will tell you so.

Catch you on the Flip!

If you would like for me to pray for you, please drop me an e-mail by clicking prayer.

  1. Maybe we can have the chicken and rice dish again soon.

"Slow down" would be a great guiding phrase for this month.

I knew the Master Storyteller would come through with the story behind the song. :)

    1. Thank you. We hope all goes well for him. This all happened in a matter of a few short weeks. We can't help but be concerned. But, he is an adult and capable of making his own decisions. Have a great week.

  3. That's good advice that you gave your youngest son. It does seem like quite a whirlwind in terms of timing. You are quite gifted with woodworking! Wish I had even a small amount of skill in that area.

    1. My woodworking is just basic stuff. Back when we had HGTV and DIY, we loved watching Norm Abrams build stuff.

    1. Suzanne taught me a few years ago. It really is not that difficult. I thought it would be more involved than it is. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a great week.
