The Town That Saved Itself
#TivoliStrong Chances are you have never heard of Tivoli, Texas. One of the on-air personalities for The Weather Channel continued to report that Hurricane Harvey was making landfall in an “Uninhabited” part of Texas. That could not be more wrong.
As you know, the little town of Rockport, Texas was 100% lost. Relief poured into Rockport almost immediately. However, just up the road sits Tivoli. We have to pass through this quaint little town on our way to Texas A&M Corpus Christi on the rare times we are able to afford to travel from our home in Wharton, Texas, to visit our youngest daughter.
Tivoli is the home of our favorite Dairy Queen restaurant on the planet. That is saying a lot. We almost always stop by this DQ on our way either to visit Maggie or on our way back. Even though we only get there about once or twice a year, because we cannot afford the trip more often than that, when we walk in this restaurant it is like Norm walking into Cheers. They don’t know our names, and we don’t know theirs, but they treat us like family.
One time when we stopped in, the song Raining Men came on the sound system and the employees, along with our daughter, sang this song together like they were old friends. You will never meet a stranger in Tivoli, even if you have never been there.
But Tivoli was left to fend for itself after the storm. Relief efforts started in Rockport. When word came that Houston had been flooded, most of the relief effort passed through this little town and did not even slow down.
Can you believe it, even the H. E. B. Supermarket relief squad passed through this town?
Tivoli lost everything, the Volunteer Fire Department is demolished. Many homes were wiped out and most sustained some type of damage. But, NO help came. The town worked together to save itself.
If you want to help a group of people who really need it, send your money to the town of Tivoli, Texas.

That is so sad that no one wanted to help them.
ReplyDeleteYes, the only "Help" they got was from a health inspector who was picky about meat thermometers. Those are great when you aren't just trying to hold on. Have a great week.
