Here are the fill-ins:

1. As a child, I feared my sister.

I think when my mom was pregnant with my sister, she was frightened by Lucy Van Pelt from the Peanuts comic strip.  You know how they say that a baby is often marked by something that the pregnant mother encounters?

If you read the early Peanuts comics, you will see very much what my sister was like. If you watch the Rugrats and see Angelica Pickles, you will see a character that is modeled pretty much to a T of my sister.

This girl found every way she could to see how she could terrorize me.  She would lay down on top of me, face up, and squish me until I could not breathe.  She called that fun.

Our mom had this idea that she got from her grandpa.  Whip every child around and you make sure you get the right one.  So, if my sister did anything, we both got spanked. If I told my mother on my sister, hoping that mom would know who did whatever, I got spanked for tattling.  If my sister told on me, I got spanked and she didn’t.
2. Friday the 13th is a very big day for playing the lottery.

Back when Suz and I worked at the convenience stores, Friday the 13th was always a big day.  Many people think it is lucky. At one store, Slot #13 is the most popular slot. At the other store, there is no slot 13; the owner is superstitious.

Today, people will line up to play.  Almost all of them will have some secret that no one else knows, but they are more than happy to tell everyone else.
3. I think picking Suzanne to be my wife is my best quality.

Maybe that wasn’t grammatically correct but, it is true.  I think she is the best choice I ever made. If you read the story about The Sisterhood, you will see that maybe I did not do as much of the picking as I thought.
4. You can’t go wrong with Duke’s Mayonnaise.

Many Southern recipes will say something like “half a cup of Duke’s”.  They know they don’t need to explain and they know all good, well brought up, Christian Southern ladies know exactly what Duke’s is.

If you make deviled eggs, you have to use Duke’s.  If you make tater salad, you have to have Duke’s. If you take anything to a Southern Baptist Church fellowship meal, if it has any mayonnaise on it that does not come out of that yellow and black jar, you will not be allowed back in the church until you have been visited by the church ladies and properly “Churched”.

If you don’t know what being churched is, just ask.  I think it is strictly a Southern Baptist Church term that has faded into the past.

When you get to heaven and you walk up to the tomato sandwich table, you can bet there will be Duke’s Mayonnaise.

  1. I can't imagine making your "debiled eggs" or tomato sandwiches with anything but Duke's, mostly because I'd have to learn to run faster if I did. haha

    I love you, my Zing.

    1. It would be very disappointing to have anything other than Duke's on my sandwich or in my deviled eggs. I love you, my Zing!

  2. Duke’s is great, but i know some Southern Baptist ladies who swear by Hellman’s, and still others who won’t use anything but Miracle Whip. It must be a regional thing.

How awful that your sister was allowed to behave that way. Children like that often grow up to be very unpleasant adults, too.

    1. Many of the churches back home published cookbooks as fundraisers. Many recipes in them would say, "Half a cup of Duke's." Oh yes, my sister was a real piece of work. Only recently did I find out that my mother knew what was going on, and allowed it. I did get her back one time, read about that Here.

  3. Now I'm hungry for tater salad! I don't think I've ever heard of or seen Duke's mayonnaise, but it sure sounds like some of the best. And I'm sorry to hear about how your sister treated you. Thinking of Lucy and Angelica Pickles, I can only imagine what that must have been like. Thank you for joining in on the Friendly Fill-Ins! I hope you have a blessed weekend!

    1. My sister is/was a real piece of work. Now, the two of us can be sitting in a room. She will be talking and never ever hear a word I have to say. I could just as easily send my shoes to talk to her as go myself. It is doubtful she would notice.

Duke's has a certain flavor that no other mayonnaise seems to have. I like to joke about it being a Southern Baptist thing because in so many churches we have been a part of, the church will publish a cookbook and many of the recipes will say something like a half cup of Duke's and everyone knows exactly what is meant. Have a blessed week.

  4. Thank you for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. Your sister sounds s=worse than mine. Yes, choosing Suzanne for your wife was a wise choice. I need to try this Duke's mayo someday. Have a nice weekend!

    1. Do you remember back in the 1970s when Coors Beer was illegal east of the Mississippi? I think Duke's is illegal North of the Mason Dixon line. For any Northerners, perhaps we could provide a little Smoky and The Bandit type of blockade running to get Duke's up north. Have a blessed week.

  5. Hmm, we must ask the Humans about this Dukes mayonnaise . Don’t have such a thing in the Inland Northwest!

    1. I don't think we allow anything as good as Duke's to go "up north". I think we try to keep it a "Southern Secret". Have a blessed week.

  6. I never thought about playing the lottery on Friday the 13th. I never thought of not playing it on that day either. Interesting that people line up for it on that day though.

    Have a great week!

    1. People can be strange. Most of the people around here who play the lottery have a system. These systems seldom work. One guy we know spends at least $36k per year just on Pick 3 in one store. Once he won $22k and thought that was great. He is still in the hole. I guess it is fun for him anyway. Have a blessed week.
