Here are the fill-ins:

1. September is the perfect month for watching the leaves begin to turn colors.

It has actually been years since we have seen the leaves change colors.  Back in civilization, the trees changed colors every year. We would ride to the mountains and get the most delicious apples in the world.  Out here on the Texas Gulf Coast, we don’t see the leaves change. Most of the time, they don’t even fall off the trees until the new growth in the spring pushes the old ones out.

2. This month, I am looking forward to not much.

Our lives are pretty much the same old thing every day of every week of every month. Most people say same ol’ same ol’; we used to call it same-o same-o.

However, with the upcoming holiday season, the Kitchen at McClendon Villa will be experimenting with different recipes and I get to sample them.  The ones we like the most will be made into videos.

3. My morning routine always includes going to the potty.

We get up, go potty, read our Bibles, and start on the computers or read. It is a very simple thing

4. I have a love-hate relationship with Walmart and Amazon.

It is really more of a tolerate/hate relationship with Walmart.  We put up with it because, for most things, Walmart is the only place we can go in our town to get it.  We have a local grocery store, H. E. B. They call it H.E. B. because if they named it after the founder, Harold Butt, the shortened version of his name, Harry, made the store sound not so appealing.

Walmart ran all the small businesses out of town.  Their prices are low, but their merchandise is junk.

We buy as much as we can through Amazon.  We try to always use our Amazon Chase card so we get rewards points to spend at Amazon.

The prices are competitive with Walmart, except on groceries.

If Amazon can ever get their prices worked out where they can compete on groceries AND accept SNAP benefits (Food Stamps) we would use them exclusively.

However, Amazon does have its problems.  Their customer service sucks. Just try to find a customer service phone number.  We tried writing them and they actually received the letters, but sent them back unopened with a sticker on them that said, “Wrong Address”.  See our post Kindle Complaint for more details.

We are in pre-production of several different recipes for From the Kitchen of McClendon Villa.  For us, pre-production means we are making the recipes ourselves and trying to make them as easy to follow as possible.  Some of the recipes we have found are way too complicated. Once we can uncomplicate them and get all the details worked out correctly, we will record them.

Suzanne and our youngest daughter, Maggie, are working hard in the kitchen to work out the details and I am right in there doing the taste testing.

Have a blessed week, y’all.

  1. One of my goals is to be able to get back to SC to see the leaves changes colors again...at least once, before our time is up. That would be a wonderful trip!
I love you, my Zing. :)

    1. That sounds like a wonderful goal. See the leaves and eat a South Carolina apple again. I love you, my Zing!

  2. Know what you mean regarding Amazon. Have a fantastic weekend!

    1. Yep. When Amazon is good, they are very good. When they are bad, they are horrible. Have a Jesus filled week.

  3. David,

Thanks for sharing the recipe videos, especially the one for yeast rolls. I can make great buttermilk biscuits but my yeast rolls is a hit or miss thingy. I am looking forward to changes to come. Fall is my favorite season. It's always a welcome treat after the heat & humidity of summer.

Our routine is generally the same Monday-Friday; DH goes to work and I dab around the house. The weekends we enjoy spending it together doing whatever we want.

We shop locally at Walmart because they have nearly everything we want & their prices are usually the lowest in town. I wish they'd focus on USA made products like the founder initially did. I know this is getting harder and harder no matter where you shop, especially on clothing, electronics, and such but food items there's no comprising in this department in my opinion. We read labels and if we find foods producing or manufactured (i.e. some Hershy's candies are made in Mexico and Nabisco produces their Oreo cookies in a plant south of the border) outside the USA then we'll look for a substitute or different brand. Amazon has competitive pricing on most things. We're prime members but not on the grocery side. I think Amazon needs to do away with the shipping fee especially if you're already a prime member and it might entice others to buy if they remove the shipping cost for all grocery orders over XX-dollars. I also try to use my Amazon CC for all purchases to earn cash back which I promptly apply back onto my CC statement each month. I used to that money on Amazon purchases but we don't shop much with Amazon ever since they started charging sales tax in Tennessee.

You mentioned Food Stamps, do you not get the dollar amount loaded on a debit card? I've been told this as an option but I do not have first hand experience so I can't say for sure if that's completely accurate.

I hope you and Suzanne have a blessed weekend!

    1. I think in most states all SNAP benefits (food stamps) are now loaded onto a debit card. SNAP benefits are not charged sales tax in Texas. Some food in Texas has a sales tax, most do not.

The retailer has to be specifically approved to accept SNAP benefits. This means that places like Amazon, to the best of my knowledge, does not accept SNAP. If Walmart.com started accepting SNAP, they could beat Amazon on online grocery sales.

It is difficult to find anything made in the USA now. We can't even get customer service based in the US from most companies.

      Have a Jesus filled week!

  4. Thank you for joining in on the Friendly Fill-Ins! I wish I had thought of that answer for #1, because that really is my favorite part of September. When the leaves start to change, that is such a beautiful sight. I really can't wait to see what all recipes your family creates. I have always enjoyed cooking shows, and I know I'll enjoy yours, too. Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. We really miss the changing of the leaves. Have a Jesus filled week.

  5. We don’t get too many leaves changing here in south Louisiana, either.

    Wal-mart is a love-hate thing. It’s now a soul-less corporation, but i cannot afford to shop elsewhere.

Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. As big as Walmart is, they could actually change the world for the better if they just would. But, just like Woolworth and Sears, Walmart will soon be an "also ran" company. Have a Jesus filled week.

  6. Ooh, we love the baking idea. Sadly, our Female Human, although a good cook, is NO baker! And you may be surprised to know that felines do enjoy a bit of baked goods, at least several of us in The Tribe of Five. Sadly, that kind of treat is rare in our house!
    Purrs & Head Bonks,
Jasmine & The Tribe of Five at Feline Opines

    1. We used to have a cat named Raja. She loved bread. Have a Jesus filled week.

  7. Thank you for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. We have cold winters, but it is worth it for fall and seeing those leaves change colors. I have the same problem with Walmart, but it is all we have in town besides a pricey grocery store. How sweet of you to taste test for the cooking videos :) Have a nice weekend!

    1. We would love to have cold winters. This past year was a little colder than most. We almost had a fall. Someone has to taste the cooking. Have a Jesus filled week.

  8. We've never been in a Walmart but we have shopped on Amazon. You're right about their customer service. I have the number somewhere as I had to call a few times over one of our orders.

    1. We got a number when they returned our mail. When we called, no one could understand a simple request for a mailing address. Does no one write letters anymore? Have a Jesus filled week.

  9. It always looks so pretty here with the changing leaves. Such lovely colors. Have a great weekend!
