Book Review: Flourish Financially: Values, Transitions, & Big Conversations by Kathy Longo CFP®

By now readers of our How to Manage Your Monkey blog know we read and review hundreds of books on personal finance and financial planning. We would have to say that
Flourish Financially: Values, Transitions, & Big Conversations by Kathy Longo CFP® is a very different book on the subject.

Whereas most books focus on the nuts and bolts, the undercarriage of your financial condition, this book is focused more on the person and their loved ones and not so much on the portfolio per se.

In this book, readers are treated to ideas about how to open up a dialogue with those involved in the financial planning and find out who they are and why they make financial decisions the way that they do.

You won’t be hammered in the head with such things as how to balance your portfolio.  Why should the author do this when she points out that every person is different and their needs and comfort levels with different investments must be considered?

Longo discusses how to teach children about finances at an early age, how to open conversations with adult children regarding the parents’ finances, and how those adult children should open a dialog with their parents before there is a crisis regarding key financial decisions, where the important papers are, what types of insurance are in place, and medical care decisions.

Our only problem when Longo discusses a spending plan, AKA budget, is that she does not mention tithe.  Giving to charity is completely different than paying a tithe. A tithe is ten percent of your gross income, given first.  It should be paid to your home church and only there.

The author does discuss giving and does a good job explaining different ways to give.

We really think that every adult should read  Flourish Financially.  You will want to give a copy of this to your parents and adult children.

Advanced How to Become Money Workbook by Gary M. Douglas

This is one of those books that just has to sink in.  When I first started reading it, I was kind of confused.  When you buy your copy, you really need to let Advanced How to Become Money Workbook by Gary M. Douglas sink in.

When I first started I was really trying to figure, “Where is this guy coming from?”  After awhile, it began to sink in.

I live in a very left-brained world.  That is, I am more technically minded and less open to alternative ways of looking at things.  Then, it sank in.

If Yoda were to write a book, it would be very much like this one.  “Do, or do not, there is no try.”  Many of the sentences are grammatically correct but arranged in an order different than what we normally hear and read. It appears that this is intentional to allow us to open our minds a little more.

By the way, the author, Gary M. Douglass, owes me a cup of coffee.  You see, when I was reading page 106 and got to almost the middle of the page, I read something that made me blow coffee out of my nose. It was that funny, at least to this redneck.

Five Star Review

We give Advanced How to Become Money Workbook all five stars.  This book is meant to be read over a course of time and actually encountered rather than just skimmed.  One should participate and actually answer the questions in order to get the full benefit from the book.

Like Suzanne and I, Gary M. Douglas was not born in Texas.  However, just like us, he got here after a great deal of thought and pondering. We must state this because the FTC requires to state any information which may alter, one way or another, our perception of the book.  We do not think this altered our perception in any way.

This is meant to be a follow-up book to the earlier How to Become Money Workbook.  We wish we had read that one, too.

This book is similar to books on the Law of Attraction, but different. It is similar to claiming things in the Name of Jesus like we are doing on our YouTube channel regarding reaching 1,000 subscribers, but different.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book.  We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Review: Bulls and Bears Board Game by Bulls and Bears

This is a great idea for a game.  It gives adults and older children (Ages 13 and up) a fun way to learn about money and investing.

The really great thing about this game is it is not a zero-sum game.  That is, just because one person does well on a move does not necessarily mean another player has to give up something. In fact, other players will sometimes actually benefit more from a player’s move than the player.

The box says that it is for 2 to 6 players but, one person could play the game solo.

We found the game to be fun and think it will make an excellent gift for any family with teenagers. Let’s face it, learning about finance can be boring.  For many it just seems too theoretical.  With a game like Bulls and Bears, one can see how the theory actually applies to real life.

Bulls and Bears Board Game deserves all five stars.  You may find your kids thumbing through your old finance books in an effort to beat all opponents.

You will want to get seven zipper bags or some type of box with seven good sized compartments to keep the coins in.  This was the only problem we had with the game.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this game.  We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

How To Manage Your Monkey: Book Review: Keep Climbing: A Millennial'$ Guide to Financial Planning by David Rosell

We live in a very different financial world than our parents did.  Millennials have different hopes and dreams for their lives than generations past did.

Keep Climbing: A Millennial'$ Guide to Financial Planning by David Rosell addresses this different financial world in a way that would be appealing to many Millennials.

Face it, most books on personal finance are about as entertaining as watching paint dry.  Rosell uses stories from his past adventures to illustrate the lessons he teaches in Keep Climbing.

This book is entertaining while at the same time being educating. We live in a world where most young people look at text and respond with “TLDR”.  They do this because saying “Too long, didn’t read” is just too time consuming for this instant gratification generation.

We give Keep Climbing all five stars.  We think that the target audience will find it very helpful to them as they plan their financial futures.

How to Manage Your Monkey: Hard Core Poor - a book on extreme thrift

We have been promoting Hard Core Poor - a book on extreme thrift by Kelly Sangree - for almost a year now on our How to Manage Your Monkey blog. We actually thought we had written a review last year some time.

We give this book all five stars.  Hard Core Poor was one of the first books we recommended to our readers on our How to Manage Your Monkey blog.

5 Star Review

This book is well-written.  It provides readers many different ways to save money.  Some extreme, others not quite as extreme.

We suggest you read Hard Core Poor, The Financial Briefing, Money Won’t Buy Happiness, Total Money Makeover, The Millionaire Next Door, The Wealthy Barber, Master Your Cash Flow, and Finding Your Money’s Greater Purpose, in that order.  This will provide you with most, if not all, the tools you will need to manage your financial monkeys.

We obtained this book through a KDP promotion where we got a Kindle version free. We later bought a paperback copy of the book to give to our daughter.  We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.
