There are so many books out there on “The Only One Way to Invest” that it will make your head spin.  Almost all of the books we read on investing start out by telling you what is wrong with all other forms of investing and why theirs is the one and only way to invest your money to earn an income.

The Employee Millionaire - Personal Workbook: How to Use Your Day Job to Become a Millionaire with Rental Properties by H J Chammas  is different.  He does give a little comparison and contrast between investing in rental property and investing in stocks and bonds.  In this case, he actually gives the pros and cons for both.

Nowhere in the book does Mr. Chammas tell his readers it is going to be easy.  He does not tell you that checks will pour in while you sip on umbrella drinks.

This book tells you how to get started on a fairly moderate income and then roll it into owning and renting out multiple properties.  

He takes his readers through the whole enchilada.  He tells readers about the process of getting pre-approval for a loan and then finding properties and making an offer.

He even tells his readers what they need to take to the closing on a sale of property.  He attempts to make this “white-knuckle” event much less stressful.

Readers are given links to online forms that help with the whole process from start to finish.  He even takes his readers through getting their budget in line before they start.

We truly believe The Employee Millionaire is a must read for anyone attempting to find a way to add to their income in the least stressful way. This book will make a great gift for that would-be investor on your gift giving list.  We give it all five stars.

Stop Acting Rich: ...And Start Living Like A Real Millionaire by Thomas J. Stanley ISBN: 978-0-470-48255-1

I believe that by now everyone has heard of the amazing bestseller The Millionaire Next Door. Stop Acting Rich: ...And Start Living Like A Real Millionaire by Thomas J. Stanley takes what we learned in The Millionaire Next Door and goes a step further.

When I was growing up back in the 1970s in South Carolina, we had what we called ten cent millionaires.  These were people who wanted to look like they had money but did not.

Stop Acting Rich tells us about these ten cent millionaires.  The author refers to a Texas term many of us know as “All hat, no cattle”. Stanley refers to it as “Big Hat, No Cattle.” No worries, they both mean the same thing.

We learn from Stanley about how that millionaire we know might really be more in debt than anyone else we know.  That guy we know who drives a station wagon filled with hay with no doors at all might very well be much more wealthy than we could possibly dream.

This book is very well-written, extremely well-researched and incredibly interesting. We give it all five stars.  If you want to someday be very wealthy, you owe it to yourself to read this book. If you want to LOOK very wealthy, you may still want to read Stop Acting Rich.

This 320 page book is more like a course in life management than any we have seen.

If you take Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover, stir in a little of Norman Vincent Peale’s Power of Positive Thinking, add a pinch of The Autobiography of Ben Franklin, and then top it with The Millionaire Next Door, you have the recipe for 5 Day Weekend.

5 Day Weekend: Freedom to Make Your Life and Work Rich with Purpose by Nik Halik and Garrett B. Gunderson takes your typical book on money management and stands it on its ear.  

In these pages one will find tons of ideas about how to make more money through active methods so that one can then make more money passively.  This is one of those books you wish you had read when you were younger.

Nik Halik has an engaging writing style that makes the book very readable and enjoyable and, if you aren’t careful, you just might learn something. We give it all five stars.

You may be thinking that 5 Day Weekend is just another book on finance; you would be wrong.  Instead, it is about living the life you want to lead. Readers learn about goal setting, planning, budgeting, and more.

Book Review: Getting to the Green: Golf, Financial Planning, and Life: Not Necessarily in that Order by Altair M. Gobo, CFP

If you are looking for a complete guide to how to invest and make lots of money, Getting to the Green: Golf, Financial Planning, and Life: Not Necessarily in that Order by Altair M. Gobo, CFP ain’t it.  In fact, we are not sure that such a book exists anywhere.

That being said, if you are looking for a good basic book to get you from just thinking about financial planning to actually doing it, Getting to the Green may be a helpful tool.

The author, Altair M. Gobo, travels in a completely different world than we here at How to Manage Your Monkey. He states that $300 for a single club doesn’t seem like a lot.  Maybe not in his world, but here in the world of beans and rice poor, that is two month’s worth of groceries.

That difference aside, we like what he has to say. He has a great way of presenting the information one would need to better understand the world of financial planning.  

If you like to play golf and you understand the lingo, Getting to the Green will help you better understand the world of financial planning and the importance of doing so.

If you are like us and the only golf you have ever played involves a windmill hole, you will still learn something.  

Getting to the Green is well-written and the explanations are simple and easy to understand.  He makes great points regarding building your financial planning team and choosing the right equipment.

We give Getting to the Green all five stars.  The author offers some great advice and gives some excellent tips, just like a good golf pro.

Five Star Review

You won’t want Getting to the Green to be the only book on financial planning you read.  To borrow from Gobo’s golf analogy, you don’t want to just have one club in your bag. You will want to add books like The Financial Briefing by Eric Hutchinson and Master Your Cash Flow by  Al Zdenek.

With these three clubs, you should be able to play an outstanding game.  We will meet you over at the Fred Flintstone hole.

How to Manage Your Monkey: Hard Core Poor - a book on extreme thrift

We have been promoting Hard Core Poor - a book on extreme thrift by Kelly Sangree - for almost a year now on our How to Manage Your Monkey blog. We actually thought we had written a review last year some time.

We give this book all five stars.  Hard Core Poor was one of the first books we recommended to our readers on our How to Manage Your Monkey blog.

This book is well-written.  It provides readers many different ways to save money.  Some extreme, others not quite as extreme.

We suggest you read Hard Core Poor, The Financial Briefing, Money Won’t Buy Happiness, Total Money Makeover, The Millionaire Next Door, The Wealthy Barber, Master Your Cash Flow, and Finding Your Money’s Greater Purpose, in that order.  This will provide you with most, if not all, the tools you will need to manage your financial monkeys.

We obtained this book through a KDP promotion where we got a Kindle version free. We later bought a paperback copy of the book to give to our daughter.  We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.
