Soon after Suzanne and I got married I
started to install an intercom system in the Western Auto Store. As I recall it
was an AiPhone system. Suzanne was pregnant at the time and we were also having
a new burglar/fire alarm installed.
I had been working on a junction box in
the parts room. I was using an 8 foot tall step ladder with a tool tray and had
just finished splicing a junction and came down. I put my tools back in my tool
belt but could not find my hammer. I looked everywhere. It was nowhere to be
found. Finally I gave up on finding it and decided to just move to the next
junction point.
I folded up my ladder and almost
immediately I saw a bright flash and felt really weak. My father had been
standing nearby and saw what happened. I was holding on to the folded up ladder
for dear life trying to figure out what was going on. My father asked me if I
was okay and somehow I managed to say, “No!”
I had found my hammer. It had been on the tool tray of the step ladder
all along.
Suzanne drove me to the doctor’s office
and she asked me if I was going to be okay. They took me straight back to the treatment
room. Suzanne asked if I was going to scream when the doctor stitched me up. I
told her I could not guarantee that I would not. She said she would wait out
front. Dr. Baird came in the room and I reminded him that I was much bigger
than he was and that although I would not want to that if he were to hurt me I
might end up hurting him. He said that he would do his best to keep from hurting
either one of us. We both made it out okay.
