Years ago a friend, and possibly a relative, we called “Cuz” came in to our family’s Western Auto Associate store in Iva, South Carolina. Cuz, whose real name is Fred Rainey, was trying to find a copy machine. This was back in the early 1980s, so finding a copy machine anywhere was a difficult task.
I asked Cuz what he was looking to make a copy of and he shared this story with me.
Some time back in the 1950s, Cuz went down to the V.A. hospital. After a series of tests, he was called into a room filled with several doctors. These doctors told him that he was, as Cuz put it, “Eat up with cancer.”
Cuz asked the head doctor how long he had to live. The head doctor told him, "We doubt that you will even make it home."
Rather than going sky diving or Rocky Mountain climbing, Cuz decided he was not going down without a fight. He went to the Anderson County Library and began looking for a cure for his cancer.
Cuz found the macrobiotic diet. This diet is basically simple in that one eats only non-processed foods. The diet consists of fruits and vegetables, but primarily it utilizes grain and no meat.
One big part of the diet is chewing. People are to chew much more than is normal.
Well, Cuz went back to see his doctors over the years. They were all astonished that Cuz was still alive. In fact, he was getting better.
As Cuz told it, he outlived every doctor who was in the room at the time he was given his death sentence. This was back in the 1980s and, if I recall correctly, Cuz was in his eighties at the time he was telling me this.
And the real beauty of this diet is that by giving up meat and processed foods, one can eat much healthier and CHEAPER than on the diet the average American is on.
After I had written most of this post, my child-bride Suzanne conducted a little research. I think it is important to note that there is no scientific research to support the claim that following a macrobiotic diet will cure you of cancer or any other disease.
Well, we won’t say that it will and we can’t say that it won’t cure cancer or other disease. However, the American Cancer Society recommends a low fat, high fiber diet.
We also found that a big part of the diet is not as much the diet itself as the life-style that is promoted along with the diet. This lifestyle includes things like eating smaller portions, exercise, spending time outdoors, no smoking and no alcohol (or only in very limited amounts and an occasional basis).
The macrobiotic lifestyle also includes limiting soda (carbonated beverages), caffeine, and processed sugars.
The macrobiotic lifestyle is based very much on life balance. The yin and yang concept of life is stressed as a part of the lifestyle.
One key factor in the macrobiotic lifestyle is being thankful for the nutrition received. This may mean saying a prayer of thanks for the food or simply taking time to pause and reflect before eating. We think that prayer is a key component to life balance anyway.
