Let’s go back, if you will, to a much simpler time. Let’s go to a time where the only business in town that had air conditioning was the picture show.
Maybe you are too young to remember the days of businesses having a screen door and advertising murals painted on their sides.
{insert pictures from Wallis}
You may not even remember when you went into a store and clerks waited on you. You would walk in the store and there would be no way of knowing what the store had in stock because it was all in boxes stacked behind counters.
Can you remember a time when you walked into a mom and pop grocery store and you
would stick your hand in a big ice chest full of water, ice, and Cokes? Back then you had your choice of Coke, Sprite, R.C. or maybe a Pepsi, nothing else.
You could ask the man for a pound of ‘loney meat and he would reach in a deli case and draw out a stick of baloney as long as his arm and measure out what he thought would be about a pound and cut it off.
He would then lay it on the scale. Ten times out of nine, he would be exactly on the poundage. If he was over by a fraction, he would declare it to be “Close enough for guv-mint (government) work” and charge you for only the pound you asked for. If it was short, and it never was, he cut off some more from the stick.
Remember when you could get a whole bag of candy for just a few cents?
I remember loading up my wagon with Coke bottles (where I grew up, every soft drink was a Coke no matter what brand or flavor it actually was) and my dog Blackie and I would walk about a mile to the convenience store and cash in the bottles.
Blackie would lie down beside the door and I would go inside. I would cash in my bottles and get about 3 or so dollars. I would go to the comic book rack and get me an Archie comic book. Then, I would get candy and a soft drink. I would leave the store with all the money I got for the bottles, minus about 30¢ for my purchase.
When I got home, I would put the rest of my loot in a Johnson & Johnson brand Band-Aid metal can. When the can was full, my mom would drive me to the bank and I would deposit it.
The pictures that accompany this post were taken by my child-bride Suzanne in Wallis, Texas, earlier this year. Wallis, Texas was named for some of my ancestors on my maternal grandfather’s side of the family.

Hey Cuz
Warning: Always consult your health care professional before making any changes to your current diet.
Years ago a friend, and possibly a relative, we called “Cuz” came in to our family’s Western Auto Associate store in Iva, South Carolina. Cuz, whose real name is Fred Rainey, was trying to find a copy machine. This was back in the early 1980s, so finding a copy machine anywhere was a difficult task.
I asked Cuz what he was looking to make a copy of and he shared this story with me.
Some time back in the 1950s, Cuz went down to the V.A. hospital. After a series of tests, he was called into a room filled with several doctors. These doctors told him that he was, as Cuz put it, “Eat up with cancer.”
Cuz asked the head doctor how long he had to live. The head doctor told him, "We doubt that you will even make it home."
Rather than going sky diving or Rocky Mountain climbing, Cuz decided he was not going down without a fight. He went to the Anderson County Library and began looking for a cure for his cancer.
Cuz found the macrobiotic diet. This diet is basically simple in that one eats only non-processed foods. The diet consists of fruits and vegetables, but primarily it utilizes grain and no meat.
One big part of the diet is chewing. People are to chew much more than is normal.
Well, Cuz went back to see his doctors over the years. They were all astonished that Cuz was still alive. In fact, he was getting better.
As Cuz told it, he outlived every doctor who was in the room at the time he was given his death sentence. This was back in the 1980s and, if I recall correctly, Cuz was in his eighties at the time he was telling me this.
And the real beauty of this diet is that by giving up meat and processed foods, one can eat much healthier and CHEAPER than on the diet the average American is on.
After I had written most of this post, my child-bride Suzanne conducted a little research. I think it is important to note that there is no scientific research to support the claim that following a macrobiotic diet will cure you of cancer or any other disease.
Well, we won’t say that it will and we can’t say that it won’t cure cancer or other disease. However, the American Cancer Society recommends a low fat, high fiber diet.
We also found that a big part of the diet is not as much the diet itself as the life-style that is promoted along with the diet. This lifestyle includes things like eating smaller portions, exercise, spending time outdoors, no smoking and no alcohol (or only in very limited amounts and an occasional basis).
The macrobiotic lifestyle also includes limiting soda (carbonated beverages), caffeine, and processed sugars.
The macrobiotic lifestyle is based very much on life balance. The yin and yang concept of life is stressed as a part of the lifestyle.
One key factor in the macrobiotic lifestyle is being thankful for the nutrition received. This may mean saying a prayer of thanks for the food or simply taking time to pause and reflect before eating. We think that prayer is a key component to life balance anyway.
We will try to follow up with more research.
Have you ever heard of a macrobiotic diet? If so, what have you heard? Drop us a line and let us know how you or someone else did on the diet.
Always consult your health care professional before making any changes to your current diet.

Recently Suzanne and I have been researching diabetes and its related complications. One thing we have learned is that diabetes isn’t necessarily hereditary. I think what could be said is that a tendency to be a diabetic could be inherited but that the condition itself is not. Sort of like alcoholism. Two siblings can both be raised in the same household and one will become an alcoholic and the other might not.
What we have learned with diabetes is that the food we eat and other factors play a key role in the development of the condition. My family ate, what we thought, was a well-balanced diet. We had meat, vegetables, fruits etc. What we know now is that this diet definitely led to the onset of my diabetes.
In addition, my mother had my labor induced two weeks before my due date. This seems to have a strong correlation to my diabetes. It is possible that I would have baked inside my mother for nearly a month longer. This would have given me a healthier start in life. Neither my older sister nor my younger brother were induced and neither has diabetes. However, my sister has hypoglycemia.
Both of my parents smoked heavily. We often rode in the car with the two of them puffing away like chimneys. Scientific studies show an overwhelming correlation between children exposed to second hand smoke and the onset of childhood diabetes (as well as COPD).
Suzanne has discovered a raw food diet. Not a diet where one eats raw meat. This diet consists of eating vegetables without cooking them. There is no meat in the diet and no animal products. When we are able to stick to this diet 100% I feel better and my numbers improve. When I get away from it I start to feel bad.
Years ago my family owned a Western Auto Store. One of our customers, Fred Rainey, used to tell of a vast improvement he had while sticking to a macrobiotic diet. We called Fred “Cuz”. As Cuz told it he was feeling bad and he went to the VA hospital. While at the VA he was told by several doctors that he had cancer and was going to die soon. Cuz decide to fight it. He found an macrobiotic diet and stuck to it religiously. As I remember it, Cuz outlived every doctor who was in the room when he was told he had cancer.
If you are suffering from diabetes you may find a you have a drastic improvement by sticking to a raw food diet and exercising.
Currently I am trying to reverse the complications I have had with my diabetes. Exercise and nutraceutical supplements have helped me drastically improve in these areas.
I hope to share more with you soon.
I will begin blogging more regularly as my health gets back on track.
