Wednesday Hodgepodge 20 July 2016

1.     Pokemon Go...your thoughts? Are you playing?  Do you even know what it is?
I have vaguely heard of it. Actually, I heard about it from my 77-year-old mother.  I don’t intend to play it.  Now, if they were to give us a trillion dollars or something for playing it, maybe I would play it.
 Kissy
Kissy in her new hat!

2. What was something you collected as a child? Do you still have that collection?  If you're a parent what's something your own children collected? Have you ever camped out, stood in a crazy long queue, or paid a ridiculous sum for a 'collectible'?

I really did not collect anything as a child.  My mother and my sister both collected dolls and still do.  From time to time, if I find a cool doll in a thrift store I will spend $10-15 for it.  That is how we got Kissy.

3. "Collect moments, not things"...tell us about a moment you've added to your collection this summer.

Our lives here are pretty much same-o same-o.  The only really extraordinary thing that happened this summer technically happened in spring. That is when I had the three strokes. Other than that, our lives are pretty much like the movie Groundhog Day.  Same-o thing happens over and over.

4.  What's something collecting dust in your home right now? Any plans to do something about it?

Our treadmill and Melman.  I used to walk about four miles per day on the treadmill.  Then, I had to have my great toe amputated.  I have not been on the treadmill since.  Melman is the power tower.  That is a place for doing pullups.  I weigh too much now to use it.

5. A favorite song relating to time?

I know it sounds weird, but for each of our children I have made up a song based upon a song from our past.  The song that goes "Oh what a night, late December back in '63.  What a very special time for me" became the song for our oldest daughter.  "Oh, what a night. Mid December back in '90, what a very special time for me. Little Laynie, what a night."

6. What's been your most frightening or your most interesting encounter with wildlife?

Suzanne took this picture from about 1 foot away.
When we first moved to Gulf Coast Texas, there were snakes everywhere.  One night, we were walking through our carport.  My foot caught on the handle of a plastic bag.  That bag had fence parts in it. As that bag scraped across the concrete, it make the sound that I thought was a snake hissing.  I jumped sideways over the riding lawnmower.

Somewhere in this blasted house is a more than 4 foot long chicken snake.  We have named him Sir Hiss.  He is a beautiful snake.  He is not venomous.  He scared Xerxes when he was so sick.  I promised Xerxes I would kill Sir Hiss.  Sir Hiss and I have fought countless battles, usually in the dining room.  He has to die.

7.  On July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong set his foot down on the moon. If you could travel to the moon would you go? Why or why not?

If God had intended for me to go to the moon, He would have put me on the moon. I have no intention of leaving the ground. Not in a rocket, not in a plane.  I have no intention of flying anywhere.  However, God has a sense of humor.  I have learned to never say never.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

It has been an interesting week.  My friend Eric, who owns Eric’s Landscaping, and his team of landscapers came and trimmed back the trees away from the house.  It is hurricane season and the very last thing we want is for a high wind to blow a tree through the roof.

Also, we have learned that if we can get to 1,000 subscribers on YouTube that YouTube will run promotions for us.  Therefore, we have set ourselves a Great Big Hairy Audacious Goal of reaching 1,000 subscribers by August 31.  Will you help us?

Please look at the videos on this page and see if you think you would like to subscribe to our channel.  If you would, please follow the link at the bottom of this post or at the top of the sidebar.

Also, please help us spread the word. Thank you for helping.

  1. You did a fine job of singing that song for little Laynie, too!

    1. Thank you. And you did a fine job getting all those close up shots of snakes, without a telephone lens.

  2. Your mom told you about Pokemon Go? That's 1 hip mom!!!
I'm a bit freaked out by you having a snake in your house. Did you see the picture of the boa that had lived in someone's attic for years and finally managed to make it downstairs into the living area? That thing was HUGE!!! You've gotta find that snake! :)
    Still praying for you, David!

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. Sir Hiss is really kind of like a cat. He is here to eat the same kind of things a cat would eat, mice and other snakes. Still, I promised Xerxes I would kill him so, I will if I can.

    1. When I was cleaning out the file cabinet, there was a more than 4 foot long snake skin in it. When it rains, the houses shift one way. When it is dry, like now, they shift the other way. This makes gaps that allow snakes, lizards, and frogs to come into the house. I have killed more snakes in our kitchen since we have been here than I ever saw in South Carolina.

  4. I don't think I could live anywhere that I might encounter a snake. I have a total phobia of them which is of course irrational but can't help that. I like your song.

    1. The fear of snakes is not irrational. Snakes can make you hurt yourself, too. When we moved out here, I was deathly afraid of snakes. Now, they are just part of the bargain.

When we worked in a convenience store, a water moccasin got into the store. They love plain M&Ms by the way and I don't know why. Suzanne would stop people at the door and tell them we had a snake. The farmers tromped on in without a care in the world. Some of the gang bangers, those with guns showing under their shirts, asked Suzanne if she would get their stuff for them and bring it out to them.

  5. I am not scared of snakes but I don't want one living in my house. Sorry to hear about your 3 strokes! I did laugh when I read that your treadmill is gathering dust. That is what treadmills are good for. I finally gave my dusty one away!

    1. It does seem like there are a lot of treadmills out there that are no longer used for what they were designed for. Now, even if I could walk, I am over the weight limit for the treadmill and the power tower.

  6. That is sweet of you to buy the dolls when you find them. Three strokes??? Wow! Heading over to look at the YouTube page......

    1. Yes, three strokes. If it had not been for my child-bride Suzanne, I would not have made it. The ambulance had to go to two hospitals to find one that could take me immediately. The first hospital had the ambulance divert en route because the cat scan was occupied. I was taken straight though the ER of the second hospital to the CAT scan. I was back in the ER receiving treatment before the ambulance crew even left.
