Wednesday Hodgepodge - 17 August 2016

WednesdayHodgepodge - 17 August 2016

1.     I read here four creative activities to try this month. They were-calligraphy, make your own cookbook, dance or learn a new type of dance, and letter writing. Which activity on the list appeals to you most? Will you add it to your August?

Normally, none of these things would be on my list.  However, right now I am working on developing a course about getting the parts of one’s life in order.  Part of it is on budget cooking.  Therefore, I am trying to find as many recipes as possible that are cheap, healthy (or at least not bad for you), and easy to prepare.  If you have any recipes that qualify, please send them on.

2.     Bertrand Russell is quoted as saying, 'To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness.' Agree or disagree? Explain.

Agree or not, I can see the point.  Sometimes the pursuit of something is much more enjoyable than actually having it.  Those who set their eye on a prize enjoy the accomplishment of the steps along the way.

This is sort of like when a child is given something, it is meaningless. But, when he gets out there and actually earns it, it is priceless.

3. August 17th is National Thriftshop Day...are you a 'thrifter'? If so, tell us about one
of your best or favorite finds.

Interesting. Our oldest daughter actually works as a volunteer in a thrift store.  Years ago, I was working for a cemetery and needed a new suit. There was no money for one.  I went to the Salvation Army Thrift Store and found 2 suits in my size for only $10 each.

4.  On a scale of 1-10 (with 1= almost none and 10=loads) how would you rate your sense of wanderlust?  What kicks your wanderlust into high gear?

2 or 3.  I really could just stay home.  However, if we had the money, my child-bride Suzanne and I would love to have a class C camper and just ride from little town to little town and enjoy the things they have to offer. She could take pictures along the way.

5. Has life felt more like a marathon or sprint so far this month?  How so?

This month it has been more like one of those police obstacle courses where
the targets pop up from nowhere and you have to decide in a second whether to shoot or check fire.  Life just keeps happening.

Normally, I would say our lives are kind of like a box of chocolates with a small hole in the lid that you get the candy through.  You never really know what you are going to get. And, you never know when the piece you just got will be your last.  Savor each moment.

6. What do you need to get a jump on before fall officially arrives?

Absolutely nothing.  There is no fall in Gulf Coast Texas.  The trees will not shed their leaves until next spring when the new ones push out the old ones.  We had lived in our house two years before we found out we did not have a heater.

There is nothing to do to plan for winter.  It might get really, really cold here, like way down into the 70s.  When that happens, the locals will break out their fur hats, parkas, fur-topped boots, fur-cuffed gloves, and… shorts.  Yep, that is the official cold weather outfit here.

7. What's the last thing you did with friends or family where you lost track of time?

We never really have track of time to begin with.   I am disabled, blind, and unable to walk.  We may have to go to a doctor’s appointment.  That is it.  For that, we put it in the phone calendar and wait until it goes off.

Once, I was in the hospital for my foot.  The therapy people put me through those tests like Santa Claus had to go through in Miracle on 34th Street.

This cheesed me off.  When they got to the part about, “Do you know what day it is?  I said, “Yes, May 6.  I know this because my Marine son pointed out to me the day before about how cool it was that Cinco de Mayo and Taco Tuesday fell on the same day that year."  I also told them I was cheesed off because I didn’t get no stinkin’ tacos on Taco Tuesday.

Taco Tuesday is from a movie my kids watched years ago.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I cannot say why because I was not told why.  However, I was asked by a service person, who is knowledgeable, to pray for all of our service men and women, more so than usual.  Please keep them all in your prayers.  Pray for our country, cool heads, and outstanding leadership.

Remember, if you have a good, frugal recipe that I can use in my course, please send it to me.

  1. I have our nation at the top of my prayer list these days, including and especially our military and law enforcement personnel. Is that your puppy in the photo? So cute!!

    1. As I understand it, the need to pray for our military has drastically increased over the last 48 hours. The puppy in the photo is my grand-dogger Battly. She just died of heat exhaustion in an air conditioned house with three fans and plenty of water. It is that hot. 112 degrees with all of that. The A/C just can't keep up. It is blowing cold air full force. It is just too hot, 123 degrees on that day.

  2. I like it when we don't *have to* go anywhere or do anything, but I think it is great when we get to go and do interesting things. For example, like going to the Varner Hogg Plantation or Berclair Mansion and things like the railroad museums. Those are fun, and I think part of the reason that they are fun is because they are not "have to" things to do. We have a choice.

  3. Nice to learn more about you. I will try to get some recipes together for you. I rarely know the date, I would fail one of those tests.
