This meme is called 2017 September's Where I Come From Challenge
This challenge is based on Kenny Chesney's song "Back Where I Come From". Suzanne over at PS-Annie! and McClendon villa has included home-and hometown-related questions to round out our 30 days of posts.
Come on and join in. It will be a blast.
Today’s question is:
16. Was your hometown a "backwards" place or do you feel that it was progressive?
Iva was about as backwards as one could get. We had livestock living in the city when I first moved there. The town did not have a budget. They just spent money and assumed the taxes would cover it. I remember trying to get a copy of the town budget for my Boy Scout Citizenship in the Community badge. I never got one.
We had fun though. We had street dances and events like barbecue chicken fundraisers and brunswick stew fundraisers.
Like the one song goes, I’ve got friends in low places. These people would pick one another apart. But, if the chips were down, they would be there with food, money, clothes, or whatever was needed.
When the Iva Fire department rolled up on a house fire, neighbors would be making sure everyone got out. They would do their best to save as much of the belongings of the family as they could.
While trucks were getting set to pump, a relief effort would already be underway. Money would be taken up, a church would open their doors to give the family a place to stay, clothes would be collected and the family was taken care of.
That is when you find out who your friends are.
Iva was backward, but they sure did love their rescue squad and fire department. :)
