2017 September's Where I Come From Challenge Day 17

This challenge is based on Kenny Chesney's song "Back Where I Come From".  Suzanne over at PS-Annie! and McClendon villa has included home-and hometown-related questions to round out our 30 days of posts.
Come on and join in.  It will be a blast.
Today’s question is:

17.                         Was your hometown an economically advantaged or disadvantaged area?

Sort of middle of the road.  We were a poor community.  The main employer in the town was a cotton mill.  We also had sewing plants.  We were poor, but we couldn’t tell.

Since the time we left Iva, the cotton mill closed down.  The sewing plant jobs went overseas.  It is now a very economically challenged place.

Back then, most people survived on beans and rice, cornbread and greens.   Today, people have forgotten that you pay your bills first and then buy groceries.

Most of our customers had to make major purchases on credit.   That was just the way it was and may still be.

The town had very little in the way of stores.  Most merchants had to have some form of credit for their customers.

  1. I think the saddest times there, aside from loss of loved ones, was when the mill laid people off right at Christmastime, just in time to make sure they didn't enjoy the holidays due to worry.

    I love you, my Zing.

    1. This is true. It happened almost every year. Many people learned to put money aside during the good times. Some did not. It was bad that it happened around Christmas. I love you, My ZingQ
