Here are the fill-ins:
1. I can’t wait to eat everything on Thanksgiving.
Suzanne is an awesome cook. I love the turkey and dressing.
The ham and casseroles are always great. I love cranberry sauce. Not the fake kind that comes out of the can with berries still in tact. No, I like the real kind that is shaped like the can.
2. My favorite kind of pie is pecan.
Granny For Short |
This is pronounced Pea can not puh con. Here in Texas, I have had people correct my pronunciation.
When I was younger, my Granny for Short used to always make one or more pecan pies for Thanksgiving. I could look at the pies and tell I would not like them. You know how kids are. For years I would not eat pecan pie, thinking I would not like it.
Then, when I was about 18 or 19 years old, I was working at KelCo Grocery in Spartanburg, South Carolina. I was running the small store all by myself all day one Saturday. The only thing in the store I could eat without cooking or opening a can was some Lance Pecan Pies. You know the little single bite pies you see in many convenience stores.
I decided to eat one. And, I liked it. I have kicked myself ever since thinking of all the missed opportunity I had for eating Granny for Short’s pies. You live and learn.
3. This year, I am particularly thankful for Suzanne.
I am thankful for still being here. If it were not for Suzanne, I would not be here. This past year, I was rushed to the hospital with a blood sugar of 30. Had it not been for Suzanne, I would have died.
I am also thankful for all of the authors, publicists, publishers, sellers, and others we have met via the reviews.
4. A funny holiday tradition in my/our house is none.
Ganny |
We really don’t have anything funny in what little traditions we have left. Back when Suzanne and I were first married, we would eat lunch at her Granny’s house. Granny was an awesome cook.
Later, we would have an early supper at Granny for Short’s house. Granny for Short was an awesome cook, too.
Thanksgiving 1979 was the most unusual Thanksgiving I can remember. Suzanne and I had not started dating, yet. A friend called up and said all the Thanksgiving things were over at his house and we went to a movie.
We went to see Animal House. He left just before the movie ended. I stayed and watched the credits. I did this not so much because they often put bloopers in the credits, but because I hate crowds. By staying to watch the credits, I avoided the crowd.
All of my friends had keys to my car “Bird” because it was not unusual for us to be out and roll up on an accident and I would end up in the back of an ambulance.
He was sitting on a pole with a Tupperware container drinking something that looked like orange juice. He said, “Bird, where’s your car?” I figured he had moved it and was playing games. I knew he was serious when he flagged down the Anderson City Police Department when they cruised the parking lot.
Someone had taken my car for a joy ride. It was found a few days later, totaled. You live and learn.

I wish we could go back and enjoy all of those pecan pies Grandma McClendon made that you missed out on. I bet she's planning a whole bunch of them for us when we get to Heaven. Can you imagine her and Granny Gunter teamed up in a kitchen? I'm drooling just thinking about it. :)
ReplyDeleteI love you, my Zing!
That would be an awesome combination. The Awesome Fawsome could be Ganny, Granny for Short, Granny Madden, and Mrs. Harris. We would have to waddle from the table. I love you, My Zing!
DeleteDavid,
ReplyDeletePecan pie is my favorite. I've always liked it but to be honest I have never been a picky eater. I like most everything that's normal. I don't remember anyone making homemade pecan (puh con) pies...I know I'm saying it wrong but I did like the store bought ones that you mentioned as well as others. I make a pecan pie every year for our dinner and I always look forward to having coffee with it. Yum! Have a joyful, blessed holiday, my friend!
I made a point of how to pronounce it because I often get corrected the opposite way here in Texas. People tell me I pronounce Pea-Can wrong. I figure as long as they know what I mean we are okay.
DeleteThe holidays always bring back memories. My Granny made pecan pie, too. That is the one I always hold others up to. It is still my favourite. Happy Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteThank you for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. I have never tried pecan pie, but I love pecans so I should try to make one. Sorry about your car being stolen back in 1979 :(
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend.
It really is good. Suzanne has made a few of them since, too. The car was not too big a problem. That night (22 November 1979), my father told me that he WAS NOT ever going to buy me another car. We took delivery of Bird-2 on 01 December 1979. It seems my mother had better things to do than to haul me around.
