1. The oldest item in my home is our upright piano.

Many years ago, a friend of ours gave us an old upright piano.  She had had it since she was a girl.  In our area, there is no market for old pianos.  She wanted to give it away rather than throw it away.  She gave it to us and another friend volunteered to give our kids piano lessons.

2. The oldest item in my refrigerator is, hopefully, the light bulb.

I don’t get into the kitchen much anymore.  Suzanne is pretty good about
keeping the stuff cleaned out of it.  When our daughters come home, they usually leave something behind that needs to be thrown out.

3. My family heritage is mostly Irish.

My second cousin traced our family back to Scotland.  My sister learned that we came from Clan Logan in the Highlands.

However, we have learned that looking back deeper that we are also from Ireland.  Most of our family came from Ireland.  The family name McClendon is Irish.  There is a popular pub in Ireland with the name McClendon.

We are also Czech, African, Native American (Cherokee and Comanche) and more.  We had a DNA test conducted a while back and found out that we are a little Middle Eastern, and a little Oriental as well.  In short, I am a mutt.

4. My favorite family tradition is Thanksgiving.

The tradition has changed through the years.  We have spent it different ways at different times.  However, the idea of good food and family lives on.  Suzanne and I are empty nesters.  It is just me and her along with the grand-dogger.   The girls were home this past Thanksgiving.  With life pulling our family in all directions, we just plain don’t know.

Another family tradition is story telling.  My father’s family was very big on telling stories about family things.  My Granny-For-Short told us about dressing our Uncle Carl as a ghost to scare my father.

My mother told us a few stories when we were young, but not many.

New Year’s takes on a special meaning to both Suzanne and I. She will tell you more about that in her post.

  2. Thank you for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. That is great that you have a piano and the kids could learn to play. I got one on craigslist for free about 11 years ago, I took lessons for 2 years, but still can't play. You certainly do have a lot of nationalities in you, I would love to do one of those tests.

    1. I took piano lessons for many years, can't play a note. I took trumpet lessons for years, forgot how to play. I took tuba lessons and was pretty darn good. I earned high marks at the state solo ensemble contest. I can't play a note on one now. Maybe, I could pick it back up.

  3. Thanksgiving is such a special holiday I think. It's just about family, thankfulness, and food. How nice to have a piano!

    1. When you bring the family together it can be fun. When my father's family got together, invariably, doors would get slammed and someone would leave early. When family is good, it is great. When it is bad, it is terrible. Have a great weekend.

  5. Keep the piano! An electronic keyboard is not the same, the sound is different in subtle ways and it makes a difference.

The good thing about holidays is that they can be whenever you want to celebrate them. Even if you have to do it well before or after, having your Thanksgiving (or any other holiday) when it works for your family.

    1. You are right. Our oldest daughter has a birthday a week before Christmas. We celebrate "First Christmas" on that day. She decides when the tree goes up and when it comes down. Hopefully, her birthday does not get lost in the rush.

  6. LOVE that you have a piano! We had one in our old house that had broken keys that a high school friend gifted to us - we couldn't move it to the new house, so we gifted it to the buyers (they gave us permission to leave it with the house when we moved out in January). We'd love to get another some day, one that actually works that we can play on! ;)

Heh! The light bulb being the oldest thing in your fridge is perfect! That could actually be the oldest thing in our fridge, too, since I'm pretty sure I've never had to change it since getting the fridge 6 or more years ago. :)

I love that you have a handle on your heritage - we have a couple of family members that are putting together a family tree, it's so much fun finding out about our ancestors! :)

Thanksgiving is a huge favorite tradition here, too - while it's a lot of work spending hours cooking yummy food that gets devoured in a very short amount of time, it's awesome having most everyone together. :)

    1. Suzanne has an app on her phone that gives her a new possible celebrity relative every day. It is fun to see all the people she is possibly related to. Have a great weekend.

  7. I value family heritage and tradition. I think I do because mine is so fragmented.
An old piano is a great thing, as long as its cared for. Bill's guitars are mostly antiques, as are his brother's accordions. His side is all very musically gifted. Mine were storytellers (many for evil rather than good).

    1. In my senior last will and testament in high school, I willed my musical abilities, which were limited, to finding the band room to several friends. My family has told stories for generations. Our youngest daughter asked me to record our family stories so that they will live on when I don't. Some of them are on YouTube. Going by the stats, none of our kids has watched them. Oh, well, I did my part. Have a great weekend.
