Here are the fill-ins:
1. Black Friday is a pain in my...neck.
When my family had a Western Auto Store, we would open the store at 8 am (the usual time) on the day after Thanksgiving and you would think people had lost their freakin’ minds. We would decorate the store for Christmas that day. We called “All Hands” on that Friday. This meant that the whole family, including “Granny-For-Short” some years, would be there.
People would come in that day and buy cases of batteries, toys, bikes, and even car parts. The same stuff was sitting on the same shelves the previous Wednesday. We did not run any Black Friday sales.
Some years we tried to close for Thanksgiving. When we did, people would come knocking at the door of our house wanting stupid stuff. They would realize they wanted to change their oil that day. So, they would come to the house and Pappa would open for them. Finally, he gave up. He just went ahead and opened that day.
2. A pet peeve of mine at this time of year is when the stores rush the season.
The Christmas selling season now starts around Memorial Day. By the way, when you celebrate Memorial Day you are celebrating a holiday that was started by the then dying Confederate States of America. It was called Decoration Day.
Go into just about any retail store and before Halloween you will see Christmas stuff. If you go into the stores on Christmas Eve, you will see that Valentine’s stuff is already on display. It would seem they would make more money if they would let each holiday be its own day.
Have lots of stuff for New Year’s Day. When that day is over, put out stuff for Valentine’s Day. Just after Valentine’ Day, put out Saint Patrick’s Day stuff. By the way, it is not Saint Patty’s Day or Saint Paddy’s Day. That is a racial slur against us Irish.
Give each holiday its own time. When it is over, move on to the next. Don’t rush the season. And, if you want to take back Thanksgiving for all those poor souls who are forced to be away from their families because they have to work on Thanksgiving, stay out of the stores on Thanksgiving.
And my biggest peeve is when people replace Christ’s Holy Name with an X. Don’t tell me it is a symbol for Christ. That is bull corn.
3. ‘Tis the season for Jesus.
Jesus is the reason for the season. Use this time of year to reunite with family and friends. Give to the Toys for Tots, the Salvation Army and/or other charities until it hurts. Do not give them your tithe. The tithe goes to the store house. If you feel you cannot support your church for some reason, get a different church.
4. I never jumped on the shop on Thanksgiving bandwagon.
Plan ahead for Thanksgiving. Start early and make you an extensive Thanksgiving shopping list. Check it over several times. Look over all your recipes and make sure you have all the ingredients listed. Stay out of the stores. If people stayed away, the stores would not be open. It is that simple. Each one of us can make a difference.
