Throwback Thursday Not-So-Wordless Wednesday You Okay, Bossman?

Back about 1975 or so my sister, Sandra, wanted to go to a Donny Osmond concert. My cousin Barbara was able to get tickets to see Donny Osmond live in Atlanta.

The appointed day arrived and we were getting ready to leave for Atlanta. The plan was that my mother, my sister, my brother and I would go to Atlanta.

My cousin and my sister would go to the concert and my aunt and the rest of us would go shopping.

About two hours before time to leave, my father came back to the store from installing an antenna. The ladder he was using was part of the way broken, but he used it anyway.

When he got back to the store, he was limping. He told my mother that his knee went out
and he had fallen from the second step of the ladder. T

his was not unusual because he had a bad knee from years before when he dropped a cash register on it, plus years of football.

He went to college on a football scholarship and played in the Air Force.

He said he would be alright. He would just prop up in a recliner there at the store and he would be better soon. He knew that if my mother thought any more was wrong, we would not go to Atlanta and Sandra would miss the concert she had been looking forward to.

Well, after several hours, we left. Just before we left, he had me read the registers and count the money. This was unusual, but I did not think anything about it.

As soon as we were out of sight, he had the employees call the Iva Rescue Squad. Rescue Squad Six was there in a very few minutes. They loaded him in the ambulance and took him to the hospital.

What really happened was that he fell off the roof of the house into a rose bush. The employee with him, Ira “Pee Wee” Cowan, leaned over the edge of the roof and said, “You okay, boss man?”

Papa was not okay. To make matters worse, Papa had brought the ladder down with him.
Ira had to climb down off the roof with no ladder and put Papa in the truck.

Papa sat at the store for several hours in extreme pain because he did not want to disappoint my sister.

At the hospital, they removed over one hundred rose thorns from all parts of his body and determined that he had a major break that was not horizontal across the bone like usually happens.

It was actually broken vertically. The orthopedist explained that this was a more painful break than they normally saw.

He told Papa he would need to stay in the hospital for several days. Papa told him, no, he wanted to go home. The doctor only agreed to release Papa if he had someone who could stay with him.

The store had an E.M.T. on staff. We also had a resident goof-ball who was about as goofy as the day is long. Goofball stayed with Papa until we could get home.

The Iva Rescue Squad, always known for going above and beyond the call of duty, took Papa back to the store. They rolled the stretcher to where he could read the registers and collect the money. They took him to the bank to make the drop. Then, they took him back to the house and got him situated in the room.

Our staff E.M.T stayed with Papa for a while and helped him get situated. He gave
Goofball some instructions on what to do to help Papa, which Goofball ignored.

That night, my mother called the house to speak with Papa and it is then she found out what happened. The E.M.T. answered the phone.  He told my mother what had happened and that everything was taken care of.

We got back home and found Goofball sitting on the bed beside Papa. Goofball was eating a sandwich and watching television. Papa was looped, but still in extreme pain.

My father endured a great deal of pain because he loved my sister and did not want her to be disappointed.

Can you think of a time when someone you know made a personal sacrifice for someone they loved?

Throwback Thursday/ Where's My Hammer?

Soon after Suzanne and I got married, I started to install an intercom system in the Western Auto Store. As I recall, it was an AiPhone system. Suzanne was pregnant at the time and we were also having a new burglar/fire alarm installed.

I had been working on a junction box in the parts room. I was using an
8-foot tall step ladder with a tool tray and had just finished splicing a junction and came down. I put my tools back in my tool belt, but could not find my hammer. I looked everywhere. It was nowhere to be found. Finally, I gave up on finding it and decided to just move to the next junction point.

I folded up my ladder and almost immediately I saw a bright flash and felt really weak. My father had been standing nearby and saw what happened. I was holding on to the folded up ladder for dear life trying to figure out what was going on. My father asked me if I was okay and somehow I managed to say, “No!”  I had found my hammer. It had been on the tool tray of the step ladder all along.

Suzanne drove me to the doctor’s office and she asked me if I was going to be okay. They took me straight back to the treatment room. Suzanne asked if I was going to scream when the doctor stitched me up. I told her I could not guarantee that I would not.

She said she would wait out front. Dr. Baird came in the room and I reminded him that I was much bigger than he was and that, although I would not want to, if he were to hurt me I might end up hurting him. He said that he would do his best to keep from hurting either one of us. We both made it out okay.

Throwback Thursday 13 October 2016 Wallis Texas

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, I would like to take you back once again to Wallis, Texas.  Wallis, Texas is named for some of my ancestors on my maternal grandfather’s side of the family.

Last week, I showed you one of the stores in the town that still had Rainbow Bread screen doors.  We also saw a mural depicting “soda water’>

This week, I would like to share some pictures of one of the town’s early fire engines.
This fire engine is on display right beside a train track.  This would be heaven for a little boy, even if that little boy is trapped inside a 54 year old redneck.

Throwback Thursday 6 October 2016

Let’s go back, if you will, to a much simpler time.  Let’s go to a time where the only business in town that had air conditioning was the picture show.
Maybe you are too young to remember the days of businesses having a screen door and advertising murals painted on their sides.
{insert pictures from Wallis}

You may not even remember when you went into a store and clerks waited on you.  You would walk in the store and there would be no way of knowing what the store had in stock because it was all in boxes stacked behind counters.

Can you remember a time when you walked into a mom and pop grocery store and you
would stick your hand in a big ice chest full of water, ice, and Cokes?   Back then you had your choice of Coke, Sprite, R.C. or maybe a Pepsi, nothing else.

You could ask the man for a pound of ‘loney meat and he would reach in a deli case and draw out a stick of baloney as long as his arm and measure out what he thought would be about a pound and cut it off.
He would then lay it on the scale.

Ten times out of nine, he would be exactly on the poundage.  If he was over by a fraction, he would declare it to be “Close enough for guv-mint (government) work” and charge you for only the pound you asked for.  If it was short, and it never was, he cut off some more from the stick.

Remember when you could get a whole bag of candy for just a few cents?

I remember loading up my wagon with Coke bottles (where I grew up, every soft drink was a Coke no matter what brand or flavor it actually was) and my dog Blackie and I would walk about a mile to the convenience store and cash in the bottles.

Blackie would lie down beside the door and I would go inside.  I would cash in my bottles and get about 3 or so dollars.  I would go to the comic book rack and get me an Archie comic book.  Then, I would get candy and a soft drink.  I would leave the store with all the money I got for the bottles, minus about 30¢ for my purchase.

When I got home, I would put the rest of my loot in a Johnson & Johnson brand Band-Aid metal can.  When the can was full, my mom would drive me to the bank and I would deposit it.

The pictures that accompany this post were taken by my child-bride Suzanne in Wallis, Texas, earlier this year.  Wallis, Texas was named for some of my ancestors on my maternal grandfather’s side of the family.

Throwback Thursday and Not so Wordless Wednesday

This week I am combining Wednesday and Thursday since the subject lends itself to both memes.

About this time last year, our little black and white kitty cat was diagnosed with feline leukemia.  Wow, those words hit hard.  This week, I would like to share a few pictures of our little “Manian debil” as I used to call him.  It was supposed to be close to Tasmanian Devil, like on the Bugs Bunny cartoons.  He was our little pride and joy and the ONLY pet I ever had that was included in our plans for the future.

God had other plans and little Xerxes, just barely over a year old, went to play in Rainbow Bridge.  We miss you little friend.

Throwback Thursday September 22, 2016 I Thought He Walked On Water

Throwback Thursday September 22, 2016
I Thought He Walked On Water

Randy Travis sings a song, He Walked on Water.  For me, this song is literally true.

Elias Wallis Roberts was my great-grandpa.  He was my mother’s father’s father.  My
maternal grandfather was Leon Wallis Roberts.  He was the oldest child and only son of Elias Wallis Roberts. We called Elias, “Papa”.

Watch the embedded video to hear the story. Thank you for visiting my post and commenting.  Have a great day.

Throwback Thursday 15 September 2016

Throwback Thursday 15 September 2016

I would like to go way back today.  Way back to before I was eight years old.  If you look closely at the picture here, you may see my pet dinosaur nearby.

This particular photo was taken at our baseball end-of-season picnic.  We had a parade featuring the Atlanta Braves mascot Chief Knoca Homa.  I am not sure how it is spelled.

My mother took this picture.  I am the one wearing the green windbreaker.  Shortly after she took the pictures, she went home.  We were going to have a picnic.  My mom had made a great big bowl of potato salad for me to take.

While I was at the picnic, my mother spoke to my Aunt Mary Ann about the picnic and found out that the picnic was to be a fundraiser for the baseball league and that there was a charge for the picnic.

I did not know this either and was in line at the picnic to get food.  I was hungry after my team’s game in the tournament.  It takes a lot of energy to keep a bench from flying away during a game.

I was standing in line when I found out there was a charge.  I did not know what to do.  I was hungry and had no money.  I started to cry.  A man and his wife were behind me in line and he told me not to worry about it, he would pay for it.

Well, he paid for it and I got to eat.  While I was eating, my mother pulled up and gave me money for the food.  I found the man and gave him back his money.  He was very nice.

This is why I feel so bad for all the kids who are denied food at school because there is not enough money on their debit cards.  I think we should make all school meals free for all.

What about you, did you ever have a similar experience?

Throwback Thursday The Day

Hello, and welcome to Throwback Thursday.  This is a meme hosted by Suzanne over at P S Annie.  Find an old photo, old poem, old story, old person, or anything else you care to share and join us.

Today, I am going to share a picture of my house at 410 Wedgewood Drive in Inman, South Carolina.  I lived there from the time I was eight until just before my twelfth birthday.

This is the house I came back to on “The Day”.

One day, I went to visit my friends Tim and Steve Blackwell at their house.  After a while, their mother said they needed to go run some errands.   I got on my bike and rode up to the little patch of woods and kinda walked around for a little while.

I didn’t see anything that interested me, so I just hopped on my bike to ride home.  Then, I noticed.

I could not hear any dogs barking.  I did not see anyone out in their yards.  I could not see or hear any cars driving near.   It was eerie.

Here I was, an intelligent child, so my mind jumped to the natural conclusion: SLEESTAKS.  There was a show on Saturday morning television about this family of explorers who somehow got sucked through a portal into a land of strange creatures, back to the time of the dinosaurs.

This show was called Land of the Lost.  On the show, there was a type of lizard creature that could walk very much like a human, but was always trying to get the family and do them harm.

Back then, we had broadcast television on three channels that was fuzzy when it came in. The reception was not very clear, so these sleestaks looked just as real as anything else on television.

I told my kids about these creatures and then we found some of the stories on DVD.  When I saw it again, the creatures looked so lame.  But, here they were in clear DVD, not fuzzy broadcast television.

Times were simpler then.

Well, all the way home, I never saw another human or animal.  It was quiet everywhere.  I was apprehensive as I went into the house and I looked for my family.  Finally, I found my sister in the den and she was acting as if everything was normal.

Normal, that is, unless she is really a sleestak dressed to look like my sister.  So, maybe she always WAS a sleestak.  `

Throwback Thursday 01 September 2016

Throwback Thursday 01 September 2016

In the spirit of the new meme Suzanne is hosting, September 19 Somethin’Challenge, I would like to share this picture of Suzanne and I from back in September 1986 at my brother’s wedding.

The thing about it is that neither one of us wanted to be there.  My father begged us to be there.  The bride, my brother’s now ex-wife, did not want us to be a part of the wedding almost as much as we did not want to be in the wedding.  But, to keep the peace, Suzanne and I went.

This particular union was a very strange pairing indeed.  I think she was the oldest child of an allegedly abusive father.  He was the youngest child of two parents who indulged him in just about everything.

Just before my wedding to Suzanne, my brother and my best friend made a few derogatory remarks about Suzanne when I refused to have the typical bachelor party.

Instead, most of my groomsmen and I went to Red Lobster and had the all-you-can-eat popcorn shrimp.

I wanted to go all out for my brother.  Rather than put him through the kind of torment he tried to put me through over a bachelor party, Suzanne and I planned a wedding party for the happy couple.  We invited all their friends and everyone we could think of.  The couple did not show up for the party. I had even rented a large venue out in the middle of nowhere so we could have music as loud as we wanted.  We had a good time.

No one was going to throw a bridal shower for my brother’s bride, so Suzanne organized and paid for one.  Since all of our relatives who could have babysat our baby son were at the shower, Suzanne took him with her.  There was no one to watch him.

Not one of the bride’s friends showed up.  The only thing the bride said to Suzanne was “Pretty classy having a baby at a bridal shower, huh?”

After my brother’s wedding, we were at the wedding reception.  My father came up to me and said, “Your brother is disappointed because no one is decorating his car.”  I told him, "That is his friends’ job, not mine."  My father actually gave me money to go out and buy stuff to decorate my brother’s car.

My father actually offered to pay me to decorate the car.  I told my father, no, I would decorate it as a favor to him, but it was supposed to be something my brother’s friends did.

Throwback Thursday August 25

Throwback ThursdayAugust 25

Hello and welcome to Throwback Thursday.  This is a fun meme sponsored by my beautiful child-bride Suzanne over at P. S. Annie.

Today, we are going to throwback all the way to 1978.

This photo is the one of Suzanne in the eighth grade.  It is also the very first picture Suzanne sent me of herself when we first started writing oh so many years ago.

This picture is very special to me because it is a reminder of the beautiful girl the Holy Spirit told me to write.

What about you?  Do you have some old photos you would like to share with us?

Throwback Thursday, August Happiness Challenge, and Happy Birthday Suzanne!

Happy Birthday to my Child-Bride

Throw Back Thursday

August Happiness Challenge

18 August 2016

Welcome to Throwback Thursday and August Happiness Challenge for 18 August 2016.  And, Happy Birthday, Suzanne.

Today is a really special day.  Suzanne and I went on our very first date 35 years ago today.  We went out to eat, I think at Red Lobster, and then to see the movie Endless Love. The Holy Spirit had led me to write to her.

The date was fantastic, but the movie was not so great.  Still, from time-to-time on our anniversary, we will watch the movie.  The song became sort of “Our Song” after we saw the movie.
Suzanne and I got married on 3 November 1984. It was great.
Suzanne is my Zing, which is a term that comes from the movie Hotel Transylvania and its sequel, Hotel Transylvania 2.   If you have not watched either of these movies, you really should.  The sequel is better, but it helps to know the back-story from the first one.

I am sharing several pictures of Suzanne for Throwback Thursday, which is a great meme, by the
way.

Also, needless to say, Suzanne, the love of my life, my child-bride, is what makes me happiest.  I am so glad that my father proposed to her for me.

Suzanne and I have shared many wonderful, and some not so wonderful, times together.  I love her.  Thank you, Suzanne, for all the wonderful years together.

If you would like to wish Suzanne a Happy Birthday, pop on over to P.S. Annie and leave her a comment.
